Cheer about a bargain

Post by eccles »

I found this lovely barometer in the For-Sale section of the NextDoor website. At over 2 foot 6 inches long with an 8 inch dial it's a pretty substantial looking thing. The carved wood looks like oak, the brass surround has a nice aged patina so I've resisted the urge to polish it, just gave it a clean with a damp cloth to give it a burnished look. The thermometer is mercury which is no longer used and suggests that it is probably a genuine antique. The face is marked "Kemp Bros Union St Bristol". This is an upmarket jeweller that has been trading since the 19th century. There are signs of restoration so I would hazard a guess that Kemp's were responsible for the work.

A snip at £15.

I love that, Eccles! I reckon that was an absolute bargain!

I have a barometer somewhere - I think it was my father-in-law's - will have a look at it to see if I can espy the maker.

That's a really nice find and yes a fantastic bargain at that price.

Just about everything of mine these days can be found in MFI and they just don't make things like they used to.

This is ours, but it doesn't have a maker's name so now I'm suspecting it's a cheap modern 'copy'!

Treasure yours, Eccs!

No. It works at telling the barometric pressure but it can give a good indication what the local weather might be in the very near future.
Merry, yours looks quite nice and there's nothing wrong with modern. If it works then why knock it? The hygrometer is nice to have.
