Where is Patience?

Post by Patience »

Did I mention my legs?

No?

Well….

Since I arrived I have been wandering around in factor 50, long shorts, T-shirt, sandals and the occasional hat. The good news is the factor 50 works brilliantly and there is no sign of any burning. Very little sign of tanning either 🤣.
Something has happened to my legs between my ankles and my shorts line and they have both come out in a rash. Important things to note
  • I have brought all my soap / body wash / deodorant / moisturiser / sunscreen / midge repellent with me
I have used these for years and in the combinations used this weekend
    I don’t think I have been bitten
If I have been bitten it wasn’t a Lizzie and it has wandered all over both legs
I have not used any products other than to wash my hands in bathrooms
It affects no other part of my body
It is very perplexing. It does look a bit like prickly heat, but it isn’t itchy.
After consulting with the family sooth sayers and keepers of all medical knowledge, fact or otherwise, we have concluded that it is some reaction to UV and as my legs are very rearely on display, they have rebelled. Potential solution is long trousers, antihistamine and antihistamine cream. It hasn’t got any worse, not has it got any better.

Any suggestions will be welcome. Here’s an offending leg. I am showing the good side.

Now it is Day 4 which may or may not be Tuesday and things are open.
The athletics don’t start until 18:40, so I have the whole day to explore.

But.

It is very hot. Very hot indeed! 🥵

And humid.

At breakfast I spoke with a couple on the same trip and we spoke a bit about how things were going and how it compared to other trips. They did indicate that it was much less organised. I had expected to be picked up from the airport (at last minute asked to get a taxi for which I have been reimbursed), given info on how to get from hotel to track and maybe we would have travelled as a group. I would also have expected to have had some co-ordination so we knew who each other were. For many they have travelled together before, whilst this is my first organised one and I looked forward to some company, some chat with others and not be left to my own devices.
Anyway, I think this couple messaged the organiser as a message appeared that after today’s session we would meet at the hotel (that some of us are at) and go for a drink. Oh, and there will be a meet-up nearer the stadium on Thursday.
It all sounds good. I have found that alliances and friendships are generally formed in the first 2 days and after that it is difficult. We are on day 4. I have also noticed that couples are welcomed and invited to join others at a table, but not singles. It is very disappointing when you have just been speaking to one couple at their table and walk away to hear them inviting the next couple to join them.

Enough of the moaning. Until later. 😜

After breakfast, I took a bus or tram or a mix to Buda Castle and walked up the rest of it. I came across a ticket office and asked for a ticket for a walking tour and entry to the museums. For whatever reason, if I did this then I had to go on the 2pm tour and if I just bought the tour, then it started in 7 mins. I bought the tour ticket and was given instructions consisting of lift, stairs and fountain. I find the lift then see some stairs and then a fountain.

However, there are people but not much sign of a walking tour. I look around and look around. Then I see an information booth and scuttle over there. The tour starts outside and I had past the 3 people and the tour guide. Outside I went. Then we were joined by another person and then by a father and son. All of us apologising and muttering about directions.

The tour was very interesting and can be boiled down to - Hungary has been invaded many times over the years and each time the new occupiers pull stuff down and build their stuff in its place. As Hungary took the side of the Nazi’s in WWII and then tried to change sides everyone bombed them and a lot of Buda was destroyed. They have rebuilt a lot of the stuff around the castle and it looks marvellous.

Did I mention it was hot? Well it was after midday and I needed to sit down and drink something without moving too far. The nearest thing was Starbucks. I’m not sure I have ever been in one. Anyway I got some croissant and a dragon fruit drink and felt a bit better but not wonderful. I decided to head home and caught a bus then either a train or a metro or maybe both. I don’t know, but I did make it back to my lovely air conditioned room where I lay down for the afternoon and snoozed.

I did take one picture of this church where the beautiful roof is made of ceramic tiles.
Pretty
Pretty
Whilst walking back to the bus, it would appear that someone felt worst than me and the fire brigade were lowering them in a stretched from the top level to a lower one where I assume they were then treated.

Oh wait! Here’s some photos of Fisherman’s Bastion which was opposite Starbucks.

Where is Patience?

Post by Patience »

Once I woke up, I toddled off to the track. I generally walk and did again on this occasion. It’s just over 2 miles and there is a nice breeze along the river.

Again the discus was the event with all the excitement. Percovic was a favourite along with Valerie Allman.
Pistitions after 3 rounds
Allman was 1st, Feng 2nd, Percoviz 3rd, Pudenz 4th and Tausaga 5th. Second and 3rd was separated 40cm and 4th to 5th by 17cm!
Round 4, Allman extends her lead to 69.23m and Feng to 67.18m.
It all kicks off in R5

Van Klinken moves from 7th to 2nd with 67.20m.
Tausaga in 5th throws 69.49m to take the lead by 26cm! This is also a pb by around 4m!
Feng moves ahead of Van Klinken with 67.41m
Neither Allman or Perkovic improve.
Final round. Feng throws a bit further, but not enough to overtake Allman. Neither Allman nor Tausaga improve. However Tausaga still threw further than her previous best.

There were also some track races.

The weather was a bit kinder and the competition finished in 29degC heat and 51%humidity.

I was sad that Laura didn’t get a medal in the 1500m. The last 400m was FAST.

I got back to the hotel. No others were there so I messaged the organiser who eventually got back to me to apologise for not giving me the location of drinks. It was only up the road so I headed there and met the couple that generally speak to me. When we got to the pub there were about 8 there and settled into a table and there was no real attempt to speak to us as they were now in their group. The organiser did come over to say hello and have a little chat. I had a drink out of politeness and headed back.

Day 5 in the Big Athletics House.

There’s a morning and evening sessions so not much time for sightseeing.
The morning session consisted of heats and qualifying. All the gents got through in the men’s 800m, but only 2 of the ladies. 😞 The 200m was more successful and everyone got through. There were no Brits in the field events, so it was just watching who did and didn’t get through.

3 of the people in my row and 3 in several rows behind are in the same group as me but a different hotel and they invited me to join them for lunch which was very nice of them. A little walk to the suburban railway, 2 stop up and a little walk and we were at a restaurant which was fabulous and the food was very good. I had the Hungarian chicken. It a chicken leg which was cooked perfectly and had some form of sauce, some rich and some vegetable mix. This was followed by cake. It would be rude not to. We then went for a wander around the big indoor market. The ground floor is ful of fresh meats, fruit and vegetables. The fruit looked delicious. The upper floor was tat central.
Music boxes of Star Wars, etc
Music boxes of Star Wars, etc
After an hour, I tottered back to the hotel for a snooze. It was very hot again and they had moved the 5,000 heats from the morning session to the evening one because the weather was too hot and humid for them. Is poor spectators could suffer. They did announce that if you were in the sun you could sit in any free shaded seat anywhere in the stadium. In the morning it is mostly the expensive seats that are in the sun. No such announcement in the evening.
However, the organiser couldn’t make it to the evening session and gave me his ticket. This was in the upper tier in the home straight and had fabulous views. I could see what was happening the in PV and hammer qualifying!
View from the posh seats
View from the posh seats
The track events came to life. The first heat of the 5,000m was lead by a young Latvian who ran her own race and with only a few laps to go had a lead of over 100m. This is just the way she runs. The main pack pulled her in in the last lap and she qualified for the final! Alas, non e of the British ladies did.
Cindy Sember didn’t qualify for the 100mH final which was sad. Fortunately there were no big mishaps and the big names got through.
we got one athlete, Anna Purchase through to the Hammer final while the big name, Anita Wlodarczek went out. She hasn’t been on form this year after getting injured whilst tackling some ne’er do wells who tried to steal her car.

Molly Couldray did fabulously will to get a on and finish 5th in the PV! The two leaders, Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy both had the same number of failures and the bar moved to a height which would have been a PB of both of them. Unfortunately they weren’t able to make it and they were still tied. Normally this would mean a jump off. However, after the men’s high jump at the Olympics it now seems to be the thing to share the medals. I don’t agree with this and was sad.

Now it was theeee event of the night for me. The men’s 1500m. Could ingebritson be beaten again?
Yes
In the same way
By a Scot
By a member of the same club as the last person to beat him.
We were on our feet and cheering and cheering.
Well done Josh.
I did wonder when the introductions were being made (by Jake Weightman’s dad) and he only introduced Josh by name and didn’t mention that he was Olympic Bronze medalist if this had fired Josh even more!

I was sooo excited by this win that the Women’s 400m final and the Men’s 400mH was a bit of a blur.
I was glad that Paulino won and sad that both Lieke Klaver and Rhasidat Adeleke didn’t win any medals.

The 400mH was as expected. Except Warhol’s seemed to have some difficulty and at one point I thought he may be beaten.

The rash looks like a sweat rash to me. If it is there's not a lot you can do except wash your legs regularly which given the heat I'm sure you do.

I'm greatly enjoying your write-ups about the athletics, Patience. I couldn't believe that Ingerbritsen got caught out in exactly the same way as last year, and by another Scot as well. Nor could he judging by the expression on his face.

Day 6

The morning was free and I had booked a ticket online for the 10am tour in English. It wasn’t the easiest of things to book and I was very pleased with myself. I checked the ticket at breakfast and it says that you must have a printed copy and to go to the ticket office in advance. I used the Metro to get to Parliament and found the Underground Visitors Centre. Its location is not on the website of maps. As I wandered round the outside i saw a guard and I approached him with a quizzical look. He was obviously used to this look and indicated straight ahead and left.
Getting the ticket printed was easy and I queued for the tour. They have 2 guides at the front and one at the rear just to check you aren’t getting up to mischief.
The start of the tour was all about the design and the architect. You will be unsurprised to hear that it was modelled on Westminster and has an upper and lower chamber. However since the fall of communism it has only operated with a lower house which is fortunate for the tourists as we can see inside the upper chamber which is almost identical in size and design to the lower one. So not like Westminster where the upper one is very opulent.
Speaking of opulence, one of the first things we saw was the grand staircase which is very grand and has lots of gold leaf. They did say the figure, but I have forgotten. I seem to think it was in kilograms.

Their prized possession is the Holy Crown which is the coronation crown of their kings. It is guarded at all times and you are not allowed to photograph it. At the start of the communist regime, it was spirited to the USA and kept in Fort Knox. It can back in the 1990s where it was kept in a museum and on 1st January 2000 it was transferred to Parliament.

Did I say you couldn’t photograph it? Well you can from afar.
The holy crown

Next stop was the Upper Chamber. The stenographer are on a rota and are changed every 8 minutes 😱.
I hope you notice a feature in the photos?
The upper chamber

No? Well they have electronic voting. Again, not like Westminster where they traipse to walk through the Nay room and the Yay room. OK that’s not their official names, but it will do! 😜

I may have exceeded my allowance of photos in a post…

As I was saying Voting Buttons. There are 4 for Yay, Nay, Can’t make my mind up and I’d like to speak.

If you look closely there is also a wee grated panel. This is the heating and cooling system.

The thing which fascinated me more than anything else is the Hungarian parliamentarians were big on smoking cigars. If there was someone interesting speaking, they may go for a listen. What to do with the cigars? Well numbered cigar holders outside the chamber. There were loads of them!
Cigar holders

This was on the way out.
Another pretty corridor.
Another pretty corridor.
All in all, you don’t see much, but it is well explained and lovely.

Of course the gift shop is on the way out. As it was Hot hot hot again, I thought a fan was in order along with a paperweight of Matthias church. Unfortunately they didn’t have one. It wasn’t until later when the transaction came through that I realised I had been charged over £20 for the fan. There is no way I would have bought a fan at that price so I must pay better attention!

I then took a Tram to the House of Terror. This tells the tale of the atrocities of WWII and the communist regime. As you can imagine, it is not cheery. It is done very well with audio starting in each room. You are not allowed to take your bag or. Take any photos.
The audios are long in bits and there is only so much brutality you can take. The tour takes you down to the basement and the cells. Whilst it was very well done, I thought that the much smaller communist cell block I visited in Albania was much more impactful as this described exactly what the tortures were.

Once i finished there I thought I would go the the New York Cafe. However it had a long queue to get in so I went back to the hotel and had lunch here followed by a snooze.

Before the evening session there was a group meet-up organised with drinks and nibbles. I went along but found it very difficult. Everyone pretty much knew each other and were busy getting reacquainted. I need to be on my best form for these things as there are so many new people and I find it too intimidating. Unsurprisingly no one apart from the people in my row at the stadium spoke to me. 😞 It hasn’t been the most welcoming of holidays.

I was reading patience story about the ticket and thought how would she print that in foreign country without a portable printer it's bad enough at home with your own printer isn't it and then she just says it was easy.

Poor patience no one talking to her but they would probably talk nonsense anyway.

It's not nice, though, and I'm sorry it is spoiling your holiday, Patience.

Day 6 - evening.

Edited to include field events and photos!

There was no medal presentation for the 1500m as Ingebritsen was running in the 5000m heats. Funny how the men’s were scheduled for the evening but the ladies weren’t and ended up having to be moved!

The 800m men’s semi finals were disappointing from a British perspective. There was some basket case running and it was our least
experienced athlete who got through!

The men’s 5000m heats was pretty much as expected but I did read of people calling out “how are you Jakob?” as he ran by. 🤣🤣🤣 His excuse for coming second in the 1500m was that he wasn’t feeling very well. Honestly! He was beaten and folded in the last 200m. 😁

I was so glad to see Dina and Daryl through to the 200m final. Alas neither looked impressive but Sherika Jackson certainly did!

The drama was in the men’s 200m where 2 buggies which transported the athletes from warm up to the track crashed into each other! 😱 One of the volunteers was thrown from the buggy and looking at the videos he was lucky not to be squished between the two!
Andrew Hudson swim Jamaica ended up with glass in his eye! 😱.
The heats were reordered and it was heat 2, then 3 then 1. As you can imagine Hudson didn’t run very well and was eliminated. Fortunately sense prevailed and he was given a lane in the final! I’m not sure what choice I would have made between running in a World Champs semifinal or having glass removed from my eye!

The main track finals were the Women’s 100mH, the men’s 400m and the women’s 400mH. With the short hurdles there is always the chance of a mishap. Fortunately not this time but some athletes didn’t run as well as you would expect.

The women’s 400mH was fabulous and we were all delighted that Femke Bol won in what was described in my family chat as a “Dutch Woman doesn’t fall over shocker!” 🤣🤣🤣. The Dutch man next to me was delighted and went off to party with the Dutch. He still made it down to early breakfast, though.
Femke Bol
Femke Bol
The men’s Long Jump was a corker and the 4 main protagonists delivered. Tentoglou from Greece who has won everything which is quite greedy! Then Pinnock, Gayle and Mcleod all from Jamaica. Even more greedy!
Tentoglou set his stall straight away with an 8.50m jump to lead. Pinnock jumped 8.40m for second and that was the excitement in round 1. These are very good jumps! Round 2 Tentoglou fouls and Pinnock jumps 8.50m! This means he is now in the lead! McLeod jumps 8.27 for 3rd.
Round 3 and Tentoglou jumps 8.39m. He remains in second as his next best jump to 8.50m is 1cm behind Pinnock.
Is all this sounding familiar with tied distances? And just cms in it???
Rounds 4 and 5 pass uneventfully.
Final round…..
Gayle who is 4th jumps 8.27m. The same distance as McLeod!!! His next best jump
Is 8.17m vs McLeod’s 7.90m. He moves to 3rd and McLeod is next to jump to get his Bronze back. He fluffs it! 😞
Tentoglou is next to jump. He is 2nd on 8.50m which is the same distance as Pinnock. Remember Tentoglou’s next best is 8.39m and Pinnock’s is 8.40m
Tentoglou also wins everything. Sometimes in the last round.
He jumps 8.52m to take the lead by 2cm!!
Pinnock “only” jumps 8.38m.
Very very exciting and the Greeks infront of us would have been smashing plates if they had any. 🤣
Tentoglou
Tentoglou
The Medals
The Medals

Phew! That was the first field event of the night and already to need to lie down.

The women’s hammer wasn’t quite as exciting. It did have its twist, though.
Camryn Rogers took the lead in round 1 with 77.22m and that distance was never beaten.
KASSANAVOID threw 76.00m in R2 and improved to 76.36m in R3. She won silver.
De’Anna Price who was one of the favourites was languishing in 7th until R5 when she threw far enough for bronze. And that was that.

Day 7 morning.

I was like a half shut knife this morning. But it’s decathlon day so I must be at the stadium to see it all. All the joy and all the heartbreak.
It all started with the 100m and there were no surprises. Then straight on to the long jump.
Kevin Mayer is the top decathlete but he is fragile and injured himself after 2 jumps. 😞 This leaves a gap and opportunities for others.
Leo Neugebauer from Germany jumped 8.00m for a pb and lots and lots of points. The Norwegian Sander Skotheim also set a pb of 7.80m. I think we will be hearing a lot of these two!
After 2 events it’s
Damian Warner 2020 points
Neugebauer 1992
Owens-Delerme 1982
LePage 1944

Next up is their shot put.
There are a lot of events that you will find a decathlete or two knocking on the door of world class, shot putt is not one of these events. 🙈
Neugebauer gets another pb of 17.04 and this is the longest any of the decathlete throw today!

Points after 3 events
Neugebauer 2908
Warner 2812
Lepage 2784
Lindon Victor 2747

The men’s javelin qualifying was dull and I have no comments to make on it.

As I was tired I hardly took any photos.

I will leave you with the “new thing” the TV company have been burying in the sand pits and the bottom LH corner as you jump into it. It is a cylindrical tube with a wire

I think it’s a mike. In the first night they had small ones buried here. I have previously asked the TV people what they are for and they are the sound you hear when an athlete lands in the sand. I can only imagine the new ones create a louder sound by using the inside of the cylinder as an echo chamber.

The mascot was also out and about today.

I went straight back to the hotel and slept!

Day 6 - evening

Edit to add Medal presentation and photos!

I forgot! I arrived at the stadium fanzine early for the medal presentation. As there were several Jamaican presentations and a Dutch one, it was busy and I needed to fight my way for a place.
The first of the British ones was the 400m where Matt Hudson-Smith won the silver. He’s had a tough year and comes away with a World Silver medal, a British Record and an Olympic Qualifying mark! Not bad work!
Silver for Matt Hudson-Smith
Silver for Matt Hudson-Smith
The last presentation was the men’s 1500m and I shamelessly tapped 2 tall men infront of me who were Jamaican and Dutch and asked if I would move infront of them for the Scottish medal 😜. They obliged and most of the Jamaicans left so there was more room for me! 😁
Alas, Coe was doing the presentations. I do wish he would bog off. He’s had his time and his moments, let someone else have a shot.

I was hoping for a photo where Josh was smiling and Ingebritson was glaring at him, but no luck, so these will have to do.
A smiling Josh
A smiling Josh
All the 1500m men’s medalists
All the 1500m men’s medalists
More decathlon. They had 3 events this morning and 2 this afternoon starting with the high jump. By now the lest of casualties has increased to 3 athletes.
The high jump was superb. The athletes are split into 2 pools and start at different heights, but always “pass through” the same height. In the decathlon the HJ increases in 3cm increments, and in this case both beds passed through 1.99m. The top height was 2.11m which for big guys is impressive. There were several seasons bests and by the end, the German Neugebauer was still in the lead by nearly 100 points!
After 4 events
Neugebauer 3730
Lepage 3662
Warner 3662 (another points tie!!)
Victor 3569

They returned about an hour or so later to run a 400m. I was tired just sitting around watching! Rooth, the Norwegian set a pb! How after a day of competition and heat, I have no idea. It was good to see the athletes who were in contention having a battle down the home straight!
The day ended with Neugebauer still in the lead, but only by 30 Points and Warner from Canada hot on his heels!
Neugebauer 4640
Lepage 4610
Warner 4578
Victor 4476

We’ll see how many make it to the start line for a jaunty 110mH tomorrow.

Back to the track, the ladies 800m heats were exciting. Keely Hodgekenson was controlled, but Jemma Reekie! 😱😱😱 Don’t do that! She was last with 150m to do and wove her way through! The last semi had 2 of the favourites, Athing Mu (pronounced mow) and Mary Moraa. Moraa runs fast and slow and constantly changes the pace. I thought we might get a re-e action of last night’s buggy crash! Sure enough a couple of athletes go down and Mu does a 360. However she recovers and both her and Moraa made it through.
The 4x100m relay heats are nail biting. It’s always hit or miss if teams get through and sure enough there were dropped batons. Fortunately the British teams got through. I have seen some photos and I wouldn’t be surprised if some teams put in a protest about the USA women’s change.

Wow the women’s 200m! Sherika Jackson ran the second fastest time in history! Absolutely wiped the floor with everyone else. It really was breathtaking to watch. I was disappointed in Daryl and Dina. I really shouldn’t be as Daryl got a pb.
As expected Noah Lyle won the men’s 200m in style! Again he was way ahead of the others. Second and third (Knighton and Tebogo weren’t a surprise) but Hughes really should have run better. It was his 6th race and it all catches up with you, I guess. But Noah did the same as did Tebogo. These are the things that need to be fixed.

Again the horizontal jumps did not disappoint! First round and Bekh-Romanchuk jumped 15.00m! The big favourite, Rojas fouled. I’m fact she really struggled and as we entered the 3rd round she was in equal place. Both her and another athlete had the same distance, the other athlete had 2 fouled and Rojas had one. Provided no-one jumped further than them, all Rojas had to do was record a jump in the 3rd round of any distance (as long as she got in the sand pit) she was through! She did and got through in 8th place. Her next 2 jumps were fouls and BR did not improve. So we enter the final around with the Big Favourite in last place. 😱
Well, she jumped 8cm further! Straight into first. BR could not respond. But judging from her reaction and the Ukrainian coaches, they were all over the moon.

The last field event, the women’s javelin started with a mystery. All 12 athletes were introduced and waved. Somewhere between then and the start of the competition, Kathryn Mitchell was lead away in tears. There was no explanation. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ruiz-Hurtado set a South American record in round 2 to lead and not much happened in the next few rounds. Kocina and Little moved into 2nd and 4th place in round 4.
Round 6, Little moved into 2nd and with the 2nd last throw of the competition Kitaguchi threw 66.73m to lead. Alas Ruiz-Hurtado couldn’t beat it, but I suspect she will be delighted with her result.

Now for a quick sleep, breakfast and back to the stadium. I will be there all day and probably won’t leave as the decathlon PV will go over the break!

I watched the BBC coverage of tonight's athletics and got stroppier and stroppier because they were not showing the women's javelin until right at the end when the Japanese lady found her form and achieved her winning throw. OK, the competition might not have been to the highest standard but I still thought the lack of coverage an insult to the competitors. I think the BBC should be a bit less keen on their Talking Heads and a bit more keen on showing what is actually happening in the stadium.

I must confess I might have dozed off briefly and missed the men's 200 metres final or perhaps I was just so fed up with the BBC that I forgot about it and switched off. I watched the ladies and was not surprised that Asher-Smith finished a bit of a way down - she's not been having a great season times-wise.

The men's decathlon is shaping up to be a very exciting contest.

It's this sort of nonsense from the BBC that sometimes makes me think it would be a good idea to scrap the licence fee and make them earn their crust with adverts instead. At least that would concentrate the minds of their senior management and they might employ fewer Talking Heads.
Like the late Chaircat Midge, I am not always right.

The heat has not let up all week. It’s reaching 37degC most days and doesn’t drop below mid to high 20s in the evenings.

The poor bear mascot person must have been suffering in the heat.
The medals look like they are attached to the top of a rubbish bin. Can runners run faster in pink or green shoes a lot of them seem to wear them. I know nothing of athletics so have to talk this trivia nonsense but at least am talking to patience.

Day 7 morning

It was an early breakfast and there was a lot of chat about whether the tram everyone normally catches would be running. The marathon this morning meant there would be road closures and the tram line is affected in at least 3 places. For some reason, I seemed to be the magnet for wisdom on the public transport system. This is despite the fact I generally walk and don’t get invited to the breakfast tables (except one). 🙄I gave some suggestions and despite temptation otherwise they were correct!

It’s 10am and it’s hot! The walk in along the Danube was pleasant with a nice breeze.

This morning we have 3 decathlon events - 110mH, discus and Pole vault. We also have the ladies shot put qualifying to keep us company.

Already the field has lost 6 athletes. I missed that they were all missing in the 400m. It really is a war of attrition as well as overall talent.

There are 3 heats of the hurdles which are seeded by their best going slowest to fastest. The first heat has all 3 Estonians. Their skills lie elsewhere! 2nd, 3rd and 5th.

Heat 2 has the overnight leader Neugebauer. His lead probably won’t be enough to last to the end of the hurdles. There is a false start! 😱 away at the 2nd time. And yup, Neugebauer is not a hurdler. He’s last in the heat having clattered the first two hurdles. That definitely put him off. The winner of the heat gets nearly 100 points more than him. With 1 heat to go he’s still in the lead. But the best hurdlers and his main competitors are in heat 1.
And another false start but safety away at the next start. Warner wins with lots and lots of points.
Positions are now

Lepage 5614
Warner 5596
Neugebauer 5520
Owens- Delerme 5398

In shot qualifying the main aim is to get into the top 12. If you achieve the automatic qualifying you are straight through. If 15 people get it, then 15 are in the final.
By the end of Round 1 there are 7 automatic qualifiers 😳. There were no more for the rest of the competition so the next best up to 12 qualified.

The pools for the discus have been split not by discus ability but by Pole vault. The guys move from here straight onto the Pole vault. First group includes LePage and Neugebauer with Lepage throwing over 50m in the first round which gives him >100 more points than Neugebauer at this point. Alas he throws it into the net on his second attempt. In the next section from us, there are a lot of Neugebauer supporters. They have brought drums and other things! Who knows how they got it through security. In the 3rd round Neugebauer improves to 47.63m for 821 points. His best is just over 55m. Between this event and the hurdles he may have messed up his medal chances. We’ll have to wait and see. No improvement for Lepage who finishes with 891 points which is a 70 point gain on Neugebauer. Second pool of the discus is to come.

Whilst they are warming up we are being entertained with kids relays.

Pool 2 of the Discus brings the other medal contenders. Victor launches one to 51.48m and Tilga from Estonia is also over 50m in round 1. Estonia has a good tradition in decathlon with their most famous one being Erki Nool. What a name.
Round 2 and Victor improves to 54.64m. This is a Combined Events Championship best which means it is the longest throw in a decathlon at any World Championships.
Victor goes further with 54.97m in Round 3 and is agonisingly close to an unheard of 1,000 points in the discus with 974! 😳😳

After 7 events the scores are
LePage - 6505
Warner - 6380
Victor - 6365
Neugebauer- 6341
Tilga - 6190
Owens-Delerme - 6148

The PV can be a big points scorer and a disaster waiting to happen. 😱

It will take place over the next 3 to 4 hours. 😳🥵🥵🥵🥵 and there is not much shade for the athletes. They are in the full sun. 🥵
