Day 6 - evening
Edit to add Medal presentation and photos!
I forgot! I arrived at the stadium fanzine early for the medal presentation. As there were several Jamaican presentations and a Dutch one, it was busy and I needed to fight my way for a place.
The first of the British ones was the 400m where Matt Hudson-Smith won the silver. He’s had a tough year and comes away with a World Silver medal, a British Record and an Olympic Qualifying mark! Not bad work!

The last presentation was the men’s 1500m and I shamelessly tapped 2 tall men infront of me who were Jamaican and Dutch and asked if I would move infront of them for the Scottish medal

. They obliged and most of the Jamaicans left so there was more room for me!

Alas, Coe was doing the presentations. I do wish he would bog off. He’s had his time and his moments, let someone else have a shot.
I was hoping for a photo where Josh was smiling and Ingebritson was glaring at him, but no luck, so these will have to do.

More decathlon. They had 3 events this morning and 2 this afternoon starting with the high jump. By now the lest of casualties has increased to 3 athletes.
The high jump was superb. The athletes are split into 2 pools and start at different heights, but always “pass through” the same height. In the decathlon the HJ increases in 3cm increments, and in this case both beds passed through 1.99m. The top height was 2.11m which for big guys is impressive. There were several seasons bests and by the end, the German Neugebauer was still in the lead by nearly 100 points!
After 4 events
Neugebauer 3730
Lepage 3662
Warner 3662 (another points tie!!)
Victor 3569
They returned about an hour or so later to run a 400m. I was tired just sitting around watching! Rooth, the Norwegian set a pb! How after a day of competition and heat, I have no idea. It was good to see the athletes who were in contention having a battle down the home straight!
The day ended with Neugebauer still in the lead, but only by 30 Points and Warner from Canada hot on his heels!
Neugebauer 4640
Lepage 4610
Warner 4578
Victor 4476
We’ll see how many make it to the start line for a jaunty 110mH tomorrow.
Back to the track, the ladies 800m heats were exciting. Keely Hodgekenson was controlled, but Jemma Reekie!

Don’t do that! She was last with 150m to do and wove her way through! The last semi had 2 of the favourites, Athing Mu (pronounced mow) and Mary Moraa. Moraa runs fast and slow and constantly changes the pace. I thought we might get a re-e action of last night’s buggy crash! Sure enough a couple of athletes go down and Mu does a 360. However she recovers and both her and Moraa made it through.
The 4x100m relay heats are nail biting. It’s always hit or miss if teams get through and sure enough there were dropped batons. Fortunately the British teams got through. I have seen some photos and I wouldn’t be surprised if some teams put in a protest about the USA women’s change.
Wow the women’s 200m! Sherika Jackson ran the second fastest time in history! Absolutely wiped the floor with everyone else. It really was breathtaking to watch. I was disappointed in Daryl and Dina. I really shouldn’t be as Daryl got a pb.
As expected Noah Lyle won the men’s 200m in style! Again he was way ahead of the others. Second and third (Knighton and Tebogo weren’t a surprise) but Hughes really should have run better. It was his 6th race and it all catches up with you, I guess. But Noah did the same as did Tebogo. These are the things that need to be fixed.
Again the horizontal jumps did not disappoint! First round and Bekh-Romanchuk jumped 15.00m! The big favourite, Rojas fouled. I’m fact she really struggled and as we entered the 3rd round she was in equal place. Both her and another athlete had the same distance, the other athlete had 2 fouled and Rojas had one. Provided no-one jumped further than them, all Rojas had to do was record a jump in the 3rd round of any distance (as long as she got in the sand pit) she was through! She did and got through in 8th place. Her next 2 jumps were fouls and BR did not improve. So we enter the final around with the Big Favourite in last place.

Well, she jumped 8cm further! Straight into first. BR could not respond. But judging from her reaction and the Ukrainian coaches, they were all over the moon.

The last field event, the women’s javelin started with a mystery. All 12 athletes were introduced and waved. Somewhere between then and the start of the competition, Kathryn Mitchell was lead away in tears. There was no explanation.
Ruiz-Hurtado set a South American record in round 2 to lead and not much happened in the next few rounds. Kocina and Little moved into 2nd and 4th place in round 4.
Round 6, Little moved into 2nd and with the 2nd last throw of the competition Kitaguchi threw 66.73m to lead. Alas Ruiz-Hurtado couldn’t beat it, but I suspect she will be delighted with her result.
Now for a quick sleep, breakfast and back to the stadium. I will be there all day and probably won’t leave as the decathlon PV will go over the break!
