As the title says, there has been a cyber attack on the UK electoral register affecting 40 million voters, pretty much all of the UK electorate. It occurred from August 2021 until it was finally spotted over a year later in October 2022. It has only been announced now because it has now been secured. It is a stark warning against moving to an electronic form of voting; pencil and paper is best.

It is indeed. I am not sure how much use in this case the information would be to the hackers because much of it is publicly available anyway on the open register. But a lesson nonetheless. I would be most upset to lose marking my X on the ballot paper because I quite like going to the polling station at election time.It is a stark warning against moving to an electronic form of voting; pencil and paper is best.

I opted out to the open register on purpose and so I do mind about my details even if nothing to do with voting. If it's 40 million that's everyone isn't it the population is 60 million but all the children and foreigners can't vote.

What I also find unsettling is how long they have taken to own up which suggests there are lots more we haven't heard of. I thought the comment about elections are safe insulting because that's not the point it's people's names and addresses rest of the four years. Something else will have happened or they won't have owned up now.
I did worry in covid when everyone started working from home because security in people's homes isn't as good as in workplaces. At our work only big managers were allowed access from home and had to have a home visit is there a spare room so no looking over shoulders and must have our approved routers and software on dedicated device etc. During and after covid it seems to have moved onto everyone's phone everywhere and it must be impossible task for data security staff.
