Whinge about a One

Everything computers is a one these days isnt it. Except those that are an X.

My new tablet has Google One which took over my drive backups and nags me to order a subscription to pay for storage. At the moment 15GB is free but we can see where this is going.

Opera browser just updated itself and is now Opera One. I can use tab somethings and AI Aria if I even knew what they were. And all my big icons which is part of why I like Opera have gone little white backgrounds with a tiny logo if the website has logos set. HF is ahead of the curve here and has a blue H.

When I wanted to order something from the councils bins dept I had to sign up to Furbyland one to order it. I have ordered before and they send me emails several times a week telling me they cant empty the bins for operational reasons again again so I must be set up on some old pre one system but have to sign again as a brand new resident. It was annoying because passwords always ask for a big letter and little letter and a number and a special character. Furbyland one only accepts very special special characters and didnt like my chosen one. Suppose I should be glad its not do a dance holding your passport which I think someone got asked in Covid times.

I have still to master the government who are replacing government gateway with government one or something so didnt want to go through rigmaroles twice.

Is it just me getting annoyed. Is everyone else ok with one or maybe its called one because only one person likes it.

Furby, I wasn't aware of the Government Gateway change, but it seems like "one' is a new fashion.

Google One you can ignore until you get short of space.

Whilst the Government Gateway system was officially decommissioned in March 2019, with HMRC Online Services introduced as a replacement system for HMRC’s own digital services, most users continue to use their Government Gateway details to log in to their HMRC online accounts and file tax returns.

I set up my online account with HMRC when they wanted me to use self-assessment quite a long time ago. They don't now, but I'm one of the folk who use their GG details to log in to my online account with HMRC. So I never noticed that GG was supposed to depart in 2019.

Mum's office when she was a Tax Officer in what was then HM Inspector of Taxes was nothing like as scary!

If I do ever manage to get through they will probably just tell me do self assessment so if they do I will look to OC for tips how to persuade them otherwise. Self assessment is overkill for very small amounts and probably cost me more in calls than I owe already.

I wish they still had real civil servants like oc mum i suspect these days with the online chatterers its that AI thing and not ever a real person but I would like a system where I ring up and say whats this then what to do etc and they just tell me and I do it and thats it by teatime.
