Always thought John gave off mixed messages to Margaret in that scene in the mill yard; she is obviously interested in finding out more about the mill. He answers her questions and then he informs her he's busy and appears to abruptly walk off. Maybe if he had lingered a bit longer to talk to Margaret she would like him better??

At least he does not start talking about Cromwell.
One of my peeves - which this scene has reminded me of - is that, towards the end of the novel, when Thornton is becoming more understanding of the workers - partly through the medium of his relationship to Higgins - he persists in calling them men (a step up from hands) - and once or twice workpeople - but he does not ever acknowledge that some of his workers are women. I know Gaskell may have felt conflicted about this - women out working in the mills - but there is earlier acknowledgment - where the Hales cannot find a maid cos women prefer working in the mills, and the mill girls admiring Margaret in the street, when she first gets to Milton.

So it's Tuesday now, but I finally found the picture I wanted to share yesterday. I don't know why but I'm drawn to this image over and over. I used this as the base to make a wallpaper aaaaages ago. (Which is why it took so long to dig it up. I had to find my external hard drive and sift through a bunch of old screencaps, etc.)
