I'm going to have to do these in batches as we took so many and mine need to be made smaller!

This was actually our final day :cry

We climbed up to the summit of Cleeve Hill early, before it got too hot. Tom is used to bounding up the Kremsmaur and other steep Austrian actual mountain, but he kindly and unobstrusively kept his pace down to a more merry-like stroll ;)

Tom's pictures are much better than mine, hopefully he will put some of his in when he gets home.

I did like this one - in the afternoon we went with Mr Merry to the GWSR and were lucky enough to meet a wonderful Scottish guard who told us some interesting things, and watched a steam train come in, have some water, extra coal for its bunker, and leave again amongst many groans and clanks and puffs and hoots! You will notice there is no steam train in this picture :lol but I loved it anyway

Thank you, Eccles :hugs that was a lovely thing to say

OK so on Day 1 we went to Winchcombe, and Hailes Church

Tom gathered I adore cuddly animals, and I gave him quite a particular brief: he was to find me one which had been abandoned, unloved and rejected, in a charity shop.

Meet.... Alexander Fox!

On Friday, we took the train to Oxford, which Tom hadn't visited before: we had a glorious day!

Oxford was looking very Oxfordy:

broad.jpg
Bridge of Sighs: we tried to remember if Juliet had ever crossed this bridge inside when she was an undergraduate, but failed! You'd think you would remember something like that!
bridgeofsighs.jpg

We went up the Saxon Tower of St Michael, which I had always wanted to do, and were rewarded with wonderful views! Believe it or not, that little tower with a green top to the right of Tom's head is called Tom Tower!

Juliet and Tom in the Pitt Rivers Museum:

Ben's Cookies are somewhat iconic in Oxford - I think Juliet would not have stayed the course without them! :lol We found they did a vegan cookie and it went down well :up

Last but very definitely not least, we went to Christchurch meadow, which was astonishingly beautiful in the sunshine

That night was our last: :sad

We went down to Toddington Church to show Tom the Manor. This one is the OLD Manor: some of you will know that the newer one, a huge and beautiful building, is owned by Damien Hirst the artist; he swathed it in shrinkwrap in 2006, and left it that way :mad

I don't really have words to express the happiness of this visit. It sort of went by like an enchanted dream! we also made music together, cooked, I learned to love vegan food, particularly the crispy Tofu Tom fried up for us, and the Thai vegan curry in Oxford, and OAT MILK which I might even like more than dairy milk.

Tom was an absolute delight to have in the family; super fun to have adventures with; gentle and kind with Mr Merry - who loved him, and even managed a couple of squeaky notes on his violin for Tom, he has not played it in months! He is the very best of people and I was so sad to see him go. We all were.

I shall miss his amazing guitar and piano playing!

Auch haben wir Deutsch zusammen gesprochen, und deutsche Bücher gelesen. Juliet and I realised quickly that while we can read and write German a little now, our conversational skills are not up to conversing other than the very basics! We'll have to work on that :blush

We had this little joke going that 'the sun always shines on Tom' - well, the morning he was due, the Cotswolds was grey and cold. By lunchtime when he was at Moreton waiting for his (late! lost! ) taxi, a little blue sky had appeared, ready to look down on this Austrian visitor. The sun came out. And... it stayed out until.... we arrived at Moreton on Saturday evening, when the skies turned heavy and dark and it began to rain. Pouring down its tears that lovely Tom was leaving!

I wanted to find a fossil on Cleeve Hill. In fact I have wanted to find one for 20 years or so, ever since I read that Cleeve Hill used to be the seabed of a prehistoric ocean ( - that sort of thing gives me chills.. the good type) and that there were many fossils there preserved in the layers of rock exposed over the years.

Well, despite many visits over the years, and much searching, I have never found one.

We found the fossil wall.. or A fossil wall... and we climbed it. And Tom found a fossil!!!!!

I don't have a picture but I know Tom does so you'll see it soon (he just landed back in Vienna about ten minutes ago.) :sob

'Also we conversed in German, and read German books.' I think that gets the sense of the translation!

I knew you would all have a lovely time and that Tom would be the perfect house guest. And great weather to go with Tom's visit.

Jolly good photos as well.

I remember german as very very long words with a whole sentence in one word. And it always sounds cross and angry. Is merry hoping to go to Germany or why be learning German. I hear so many languages everywhere now its riduculous how few people in england speak English now but never heard any that sound like German.

I like the little train station with fences and a shelter. No litter though. Doesn't every little shelter get full of discarded vapes and balloons and crisp packets and tin cans. Did merry litter pick to take the picture.

:devil Oh it doesn't when Tom speaks it! honestly, it sounds gentle and harmonious and beautiful to me.

I'm learning it because I LOVE learning languages. :heart Don't you remember my Portuguese kick? I'm not sure how far I am on my German journey compared with how far I got with Portuguese. I could definitely speak Portuguese better than German (yet) and I do struggle with forming impromptu sentences verbally in German and I find the word order and the prepositions a challenge, but the verbs are pretty regular and some of the nouns are very intuitive - das MineralWasser. Dass Bett :bed

Thank you mim! I'm glad you enjoyed these. Great translation, OC!

Furby, I suppose the litter thing is because it's not a working railway station but only for 'fun'. Toddington is the middle and main station - from it, north goes up to Broadway, 5 miles, and south to Cheltenham, 10 miles. Our Scottish man told us there are 26 paid staff and 900 volunteers, I bet volunteers sign up hoping to drive a steam train but spend five years picking up litter.

Okay, so here goes my travel report.

I was picked up by Merry at Moreton in Marsh. There had been a road closure so she had been through some stress to get to the station, poor dear! The moment she turned up in Fizzy, I knew this was going to be terrific. I loved that car at first glance - it is just so...Merry! :love
And then I got a real Merry hug!!! :heart :heart :heart (I got lots of them over those couple of days and I enjoyed every single one!)

At the house, I met Mr Merry who is beyond lovely, I took an instant liking to him. Later that day I also met Juliet and we had a great time together. My room was just lovely. I even had my own coffee machine and vegan snacks. And Fluss and Dumblepaw were there to greet me.

We made some Houmous together for lunch. Neither of us had ever made it before but it turned out delicious!

Merry has already posted about all the things we did. I will post a few of my pictures. I have to say those four days were amongst the best I've ever had. All the Merries are such lovely people and I felt so welcome and cared for all the time.
I particularly enjoyed making music together, our German talks, preparing dinners, caring for Merry's plants - there is a tomato plant called Tom now. :love
All of it was just perfect!

I have been to England a number of times now but never experienced the country like this before. There is a huge difference between staying at hotels and doing the touristy sights, and staying with friends and experiencing all of the real culture first-hand through the eyes of locals.

Thank you so much for having me, Merry! Time went by way too quickly and I already miss you all so much! I really hope we'll see each other again soon.

More great pics Tom. Of course you haven't really had the full horses experience without LOTS of mud but they seem to like you. :toast

Beautiful pics, Tom!

Yes, Van, we felt like family. I adore Tom's sister and his mum and dad too. They sent me some beautiful gifts. Tom's dad had actually made me a CD of the tracks (and dedications) he has made me over the many months I've been listening to his wonderful radio show! (Saturday Night with DJ Schochna - second Saturday every month. )

His mum had made me so many beautiful things, hand-sewn sachets of rose petals and lavender, a tissue holder, a decorated box. Tom brought so many gifts, including a gorgeous wind-up Mozart musical box from Salzburg, Austrian chocolates, and some beautiful books in German, carefully chosen to appeal to a merry, including one about the Romans! and a reading book Tom himself learned to read on (it is very HARD :lol ) and a beautiful one all about Mozart's life - and not to forget Alexander fox :love

The thought and care he and his parents had put in to all these gifts takes my breath away.
