God in a Box

You put God in a box
And threw away the key
You carved your face on top
And gave that box to me

Locked away, in the sky
Out of reach, why did I
Try and try and try
So hard to love the god
You said was inside.

Now the ghost of that god clings to me
Dirties my thoughts, my sanity
I tried to get rid of him but he follows me
Into the confessional, still chasing me

Each Sunday morning I can't look at the cross
Hanging over the alter, found but still lost
To me.

Because whenever I do
I can't help what I think
I hate your god and he hates me
I can't look at My God
You stole him from me

Because he's wearing your face
And that's all I can see.

Wow, that's got a punch. It feels like a song lyric.

I love, love, love this.
It's so poetic and right from the heart.
And it rings true on many levels, on one side, in a religious one, on the other side it could easily translate into many other situations too...figuratively.

Very, very well done, Pippa! ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you. I will admit to having listened to copious amounts of NF rap before writing this poem...so perhaps that's why it reads a bit like a song

Well done, Pippa. This is extremely powerful, and beautifully written.
