(vegan) Austrian Easter Bread - Osterpinze

Post by TRavine »

So here is the recipe for the traditional Easter Bread (vegan version)

500 grams of wheat flour
1 package of dry yeast (about 9 grams)
60 grams of white sugar
A pinch of salt
Shredded peel of half a lemon (I used a whole organic lemon because I was feeling edgy)
120 millilitres of sunflower oil
300 millilitres of lukewarm water

Put together the flour, sugar, yeast, salt and lemon peel and then stir in water and oil until it's a soft dough.

Cover with a cloth and leave to rest for one to two hours.

Then cut into fourths, form them into balls, cover with a cloth and leave them to rest for another 30 minutes.

Then take a knife and cut a cross into the top of each ball.

I used a bit of plant milk to spread over the top. You can also use water, (cow's milk or egg, if you want to ruin the "vegan" in the recipe) or leave it.

Put it in the oven at 180° Celsius for about 25 minutes.

Done. They look a bit darker in the picture than they actually are because of the lighting.
