Poor Eccles!
Been so cold here I haven't felt like starting on the garden!
But soon, surely...! the daffodils are up anyway!

Wait a while it's forecast to snow next week. I am not putting the electric heaters away just in case.

We have snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils all up. The wood frogs have finished quacking, and we are hearing the occasional peeper [tree frog] but they seem a bit hesitant about the cold weather [testing the waters, so to speak]. Canada geese flying overhead in great numbers, returning north for the spring.
I think there may be English Country Dance tonight. At least here's hoping.

Ohhh and was it, Asy? (Dance?)
We have daffodils, I might manage to drag myself out to photograph them in a bit but have woken up with such a horrid cough and cold Apparently Juliet and STPD have it too... not surprising really as Mr Merry was coughing and coughing all last week.
Luckily it's Saturday and I can laze around feeling sorry for myself. We were going to Juliet's brass band concert tomorrow but now that's looking unlikely!
Thanks to all who came to Chat last night - it was very fun indeed - lots of people

Suddenly it's quite like old times; I have to keep a timesheet again, like I did at work.
'We would like to capture some factual figures on the hours spent by volunteers at each service' quoth Brendoncare. Happily it is nothing like as detailed as the timesheet I kept at work; just sign in time and sign out time plus a very short description of the purpose of my visit. I don't count the time I spend eating my sandwiches in the staff room so my timesheet hours are always less than my sign in and sign out times in the book at Reception.
I never realised how the times all add up; I spent around 2.5 days volunteering at Brendoncare last month, including my visits to the old gentleman in Winchester. I don't count travelling time, so it is a fairish slice of my waking hours.

I had to sign in and out in my first job. Hours began at 8:30am and it was amazing the number of people who arrived at 8:28am.
For jobs after that no one bothered nor cared.

MYF and I had a lovely time in Madeira staying at the Pestana Casino hotel which was lovely. Weather was shirt sleeves but not baking - just right for me at about 20-24C. We took the cable car up to the quite beautiful Monte Palace tropical gardens and spent several hours there. Aside from that we did a lot of walking (over 60,000 steps in the 4 days we were there) and had a romantic afternoon tea on the verandah at Reid's Palace which is quite famous and is like a trip back to colonial days. A night at the casino proved profitable and we left €300 to the good which pretty much paid our food and drink for the trip. It is such a relaxing, laid back place to visit and the flight is only a little over 3 hours.
It's also pretty cheap to visit - Wizzair flights were £90 each and the hotel was £100 a night including probably the best buffet breakfast I've ever had (we didn't need lunch on any day). Eating out was relatively cheap too - we shared an octopus vinagrette starter and both had fillet steaks at the Victoria restaurant near our hotel. It was very good quality and even with a bottle of wine the bill was only £60 for both of us. I'd thoroughly recommend Madeira for a short break.

Yes, Merry, there was English Country Dance, and enough folks present for some four-couple sets. A lot of folks had gone to Williamsburg to the ball for the weekend. I did not beg Thingummie major to go to that, because it is a three hour drive each direction. Dance in Sterling is a half hour drive for two hours of dancing, which is a better proportion, in my estimation.
This week is a quandry: we have the Old Dominion Dancers on Friday and the Leesburg Assembly on Saturday, and Thingummie minor will NOT attend but once a week. So I have to decide between them. The Leesburg Assembly is "optional period attire" this week, and I would love to dress up in one of my gowns. However..... [himself does not like costumery, and it is less fun for me in a gown and grumpy bear in a pair of blue jeans.]
Decisions decisions.

Wildrover, your holiday sounds amazing. The fillet steaks! the buffet breakfast! Honestly I fancy going. If I can just persuade one of my daughters to come with me...!

We went to both dances. Thingummie major wore his black waistcoat, but otherwise not particularly dressed up. I did wear my green, Regency dress. Because you're right, Merry, we don't often have the opportunity, why not seize the moment?
This morning we were greeted with the sound of two tom turkeys calling to their lady friends. They say "chuck chuck...... chuck?" And the ladies respond with some sort of captivating shyness, although eventually they may become the pursuers, thus: [a rare photo cap of Mr Tom Turkey displaying his tail]

The only place I ever saw a turkey display his tail was at the open-air museum at Ballenberg in Switzerland............and by the time I got my camera out he'd folded it up again!

Reckon the picture is bound to be fuzzy due to distance, so not exactly National Geographic material. But just knowing our flock is alive and kicking again this spring does make me happy.

I can understand why, Asy.
Well caught! I hope there are lots and lots of little baby turkeys later in the year!

It was Mothers' Day here in the UK today (not so in USA and Europe, I think?)
Lovely flowers from my STPD (from this site Bunches which I really recommend - good prices and the flowers are always beautiful and last ages - these made me very happy
... and from Juliet one of her AMAZING home made-cards - this one refers to our long-standing in-joke that the missing Malaysian plane MH370 faked his own disappearance - hiding in plain (plane!) sight, giving his own press conferences as an 'Aviation Expert', standing in front of a microphone with a cap pulled down to shade his nose-cone, false moustache, and no-one ever notices.
Last time he was asked for a comment he joked, 'it's a mystery. For all we know, MH370 is having the time of his life on a desert island sunning himself somewhere.....'
(Note the black marker used to change his number - 'plane' black - the newspaper - the missing flaperon he tore off himself to plant as a 'clue' - !
