Just read your intro to Christmas story - a lonely John invited to Christmas's dinner by Richard Hale. Lots of Christmas fluff and nonsense possibilities here!
How about Mr Hale tells John about Fred over dinner after saying Grace, remembering family members, season of forgiveness etc. Penny drops for John, he feels the need to apologise to Margaret. When Mr Hale leaves the room briefly, he takes the opportunity. Margaret accepts apology and reciprocates. Mr Hale re- enters room, wine glasses filled up. The mood becomes a lot jollier, less sombre. They pull crackers, pull the wishbone on the chicken! John finds the sixpence in the Christmas pudd.
After dinner, they adjourn to living room for mince pies and cup of tea or after dinner brandy. Margaret sits down next to John on the Hale's small sofa. It''s a bit of a squeeze. Margaret can feel John's thigh through her dress (John has to manspread!) She does not move away from him.
Mr Hale nods off to sleep. John slips his long arm around the back of the sofa. It''s all quite cozy, on the sofa. Margaret slowly leans into John. It's all he can do to keep his hands to himself. They look at each other and realise feelings are reciprocated. John grabs a piece of mistletoe decoration and....
Not much of a plot, or melodrama or Victofian proprietary but plenty of seadonal goodwill! It's having John and Margaret in close proximity to each other with the barriers coming down. Xx

OMG, I love this idea so much. Merry, you need to write this. Do it!
Always happy to offer ideas. Love to read your interpretation of them.
Lots of surprises all round in this little Christmas tableau!
John learns Margaret has a brother and there is no secret other lover. He also has the 'surprise' of experiencing sitting next to Margaret on a small sofa, smelling her scent...where will he put his hands/ himself?!
Margaret has the surprise of feeling John's presence (no pun intended!)at close quarters and maybe experiencing her first kiss?!
And finding the silver sixpence in the pudding! That will certainly be a surprise
I always used to put a silver coin in the mix for the pudding I made in October every year; unfortunately my FIL choked on it one year so that was that, afterwards I started tucking the sixpence into one portion after dishing it out, and putting it VERY visibly, like a small silver dolphin leaping out of a pudding-sea
"... not to be told a story, but to live inside a dream." - Hades, The Burnt City
How about art imitating real life?....John could choke on the sixpence, Margaret rushes to help him, administering several good thumps to his back. John recovers, Margaret gets carried away rather enjoying rubbing his back to help sooth him. John enjoys having his back rubbed by Margaret.

That story is both very scary, and with a practical and loving solution.
