Appenzell was split into 2 cantons in 1597 IIRC as a result of the Reformation; the bit called Appenzell Ausserrhoden (population 55.3k) embraced the Reformation apart from the biggest town Herisau, while Appenzell Innerrhoden (population 16.3k) kept to the old Catholic faith. The Appenzellers had discovered that the fact that they were completely surrounded by Canton St Gallen meant that they had to help each other in the face of economic domination by St Gallen especially the Bishop of St Gallen because the church there was a powerful economic entity. So the Reformation was a relatively calm affair in Appenzell compared with other parts of Europe.
Here's a family group playing in Canton Appenzell. Sometimes I think that nearly every family there must have musical talent when you consider what a small population the cantons have. Not only do they play instruments but 2 of them yodel in the natural style practised by Jodel Klubs in Switzerland. Plenty of drinks on the tables, I note!
And I couldn't resist this one - they were playing at the Alpine music festival 2016 in Innsbruck in Austria.

I had another look at the 'jaws harp' video that Tom posted on p 4 and on second and third looking the real person to watch is the poor woman who is listening to it all with her companion; she looks as if she is suffering unspeakable torture, with an occasional smile of defiance, and seeking a way of escape. Meanwhile the lady playing the double bass seems to be thinking 'Ja! You must remain until ve haf finished! For you there is no escape!!'
Evil OC to interpret the scene thus.

The little singing family there is lovely. From what I know of Tom's family, his is a bit like this. He and his sister, Mum and Dad, all seem to be prodigiously musically talented, with multiple instruments to their family name and lovely singing voices. I suppose Austria did spawn a number of the world's greatest ever musicians, maybe there's something genetic in it? or just tradition perhaps.

Here's a group playing at the same festival as the lady and the two children. They seem to go in for these mini-accordions.

Back to young Joshua Broger! 2 years after playing 'Steiner Chibli' in the TV studio, here he is playing it outdoors and still enjoying the tune.
and three years ago..........he's experimenting with non-traditional music.
Eventually, children grow up................he's composing his own stuff now!

Here's a Jodler choir from Canton Appenzell doing their stuff. I have noticed that it seems to be traditional for most of the Appenzell choirs to stand with their hands in their pockets.

Here is Trio Fässler-Kölbener playing a tune called Töbi in Caracas. You've seen them all before - Martin Fässler playing the hackbrett and his brother Daniel playing the piano. Christa Kölbener makes up the trio. Martin accompanied Lisa Stoll on the double bass while Lisa played her alpenhorn in the Dance of the Cows on page 2 of this thread, while the trio were all together playing Appenzeller Chääsfescht in Innsbruck on the same page.
Some Swiss folk music exponents are experimenting with using traditional instruments with more modern beats, in this case Latin American. The tune was composed by a chap called Töbi Tobler.
Needless to say Joshua Broger has played this piece several times - here he is playing it with his younger brother Samuel.
And here they are playing the tune with the composer; I like the way Swiss domesticity carries on regardless!

Here are some German ladies playing their hackbretts etc. The camera must have gone wonky in the first video - they aren't that slim!

Here's Joshua Broger playing a tune called Erinnerungen an Zirkus Renz which translates as Remembering Circus Renz. I looked up about this, and Zirkus Renz started in the early 1840s in Berlin per its Wikipedia Page and finally folded its tents for the last time in 1897. The tune was written around 1894 by an Austro-Hungarian composer called Gustav Peter and apparently is known these days as a piece for ambitious xylophone players. However, it is adaptable to the hackbrett, though here young Joshua has to compete with other instruments and the chap who seems to be having most fun is the conductor.
20 years ago a very youthful Nicolas Senn also played this piece at a semi-open air concert with a snatch of video to hint at the tune's funfair/circus background. Little did young Nicolas know that 20 years later he would be an ambassador for Appenzeller Cheese.

Today it's the turn of the Kellerheims to strut their stuff on the hackbrett. On the right is Hanna Keller from Walzenhausen in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. On the left is Alessia Heim from St Gallen. These young ladies are good.
They don't confine their appearances to the TV studio or concert hall either.

I find it interesting to see how people develop in their musical careers. Here is a family from Appenzell when the youngest boy playing the hackbrett was 8 years old; the older boy was 10 I think and their Vater is playing the accordion.
A year later they look as if they are playing in the Swiss equivalent of a pub and having a lot of fun, especially Vater! The song is Auf Der Autobahn. The picture in the background shows Appenzeller herdsmen bringing the animals down from the summer pastures - the yellow britches mean the lead herdsman has spent all summer up in the pastures with the animals.
Here they are in a TV talent show in 2021. Nino on the hackbrett is 11, his brother Kilian on double bass is 13 and dad Werner is playing the accordion.
And here's a bit more from the same talent show. You might remember some tunes they play from earlier videos in this thread - Töbi in Caracas and Erinnerungen an Zirkus Renz.
In the original post I got the older boy's name wrong - he's Kilian and I have corrected the original post.
