The Lusty Month of May (chatty)

Post by asymphototropic »

I read a study which compared thousands of dental patients, comparing those who had their teeth cleaned by the hygienist and those that did not. The conclusion was that the two groups' teeth were about the same health and professional cleaning wasn't useful to prevent decay. So I stopped going to the hygienist. Particularly annoying was upping the ante thus: at your age you should have your teeth cleaned twice a year, no wait, three times a year..... And the price going up and up and up.

So I'm no longer participating in that.

I am currently sewing a new Regency dress for the Summer Ball at Gadsby's Tavern. My green taffeta gown is too heavy for this time of year, and none of the other frocks in the costumery closet are at all satisfactory. Hoping to get this dress done and ready to wear in time for the event. We shall see!

Good luck with the dressmaking, Asy!

I had 2 nice lunches last week. The first was at Bella Vita on Wednesday. I had gone in to Knightwood to let them know that I would be back on duty on Wednesday mornings and to say goodbye to my immediate boss who is moving to another home within Brendoncare. I have been away from my duties for around 5-6 weeks because I hadn't been feeling all that good and had various tests to make sure that what I was afraid might be happening wasn't. So that is all cleared up and next week I shall be back at KW (just Wednesday mornings in future) to see how it goes.

So I suddenly felt like having a Bella Vita lunch. I kicked off with Funghi al Dolcelatte which is sliced mushrooms in a hot cheese sauce accompanied by 3 small slices of toast. Then I had Risotto con Gamberoni, the Gamberoni bit being shelled big prawns with crushed cherry tomatoes; I had intended to have a side dish of oven baked new potatoes but those were orf so I had chips instead. Chips/new potatoes are a good way of cleaning your main course plate/bowl. I finished with a cappuccino, shunning a dessert because on Friday I was going to the Kyoto Kitchen after my haircut. So that came to £45 including the tip. Well worth it!

On to the Kyoto Kitchen. I haven't been there since before Mum died in 2018 when Habba and Asta from Iceland took me there for a treat. Habba had come over partly to see Mum as she knew it was her last chance to see her before Mum's exit, and a day or two later I took both ladies for a trip to Winchester. So I was really looking forward to yesterday's lunch, especially as they have now got a single Michelin star. They will soon be moving to bigger premises close to the statue of King Alfred at the Broadway, just the other side of the bridge over the Itchen.

I started with Chicken Gyoza. These were small bits of chicken and veggies in what looked like very small miniature Cornish pasties. They were shaped dumplings with a small dip of sauce and there were 4 of them. I managed to control the chopsticks well enough to use them to eat the dumplings nicely. Then I had Seared Hampshire Beef Roll with a side dish of steamed rice. The beef roll had been cut into 8 slices with a foamed truffle sauce dressing. I had a small glass of Japanese white wine to go with it. By now my elbow wobble was so bad that I couldn't use the chopsticks safely, but there was a spoon with the rice, so I used the chopsticks to shunt the beef onto the spoon and used the spoon as the utensil for actually feeding myself. These 2 courses were delicious, so I ate them very slowly. Then I had a dessert called Dorayaki which was something resembling a fluffy Scotch pancake which had been filled with a layer of green tea cream and then quartered; it was served with a small helping of piped whipped cream. Lovely! Then it was time for coffee, except that the coffee machine was broken so I had a small pot of Japanese tea. Just tea - no milk, no sugar - in a very cute heavy metal teapot which I poured into a really smart earthenware handle-less cup; it looked more like a jar. I shall eat again at the Kyoto Kitchen and I think the tea was a better way of finishing the meal than the coffee would have been.

As for payment; I had already paid £25 to secure the booking, and my meal was in fact just over £50. I didn't notice they had added £5 service until just now, so when I found I had £30.47 to pay I rounded it up to £35. But it was such a lovely meal I don't mind being a little over-generous.

So if any members of the Hard-Facts gang - Veterans and Millers - ever plan on coming to Winchester we'll see if we can get together and have a jolly good day out!

Interesting findings from Asy regarding dental cleaning. Maybe I should have it done every other visit rather than every time.
I like the story of the dressmaking. It puts me in mind a picture of an industrious rural American woman sitting in her Shaker rocking chair, sewing her new dress by kerosene lamp. :)

We should definitely plan a day trip to Winchester! what a jolly party we would have!

OC thank you for posting about those lovely meals! I loved the sound of them.

I am in awe of you being able to use chopsticks. It actually boggles me that anyone can control two sticks doing different things in a couple of fingers like that.

Interesting about the hygienist research, Asy. I shan't feel any guilt about turning down Mr M's hygienist appointment.

I have Helen/STPD home for a few days. Much Burnt City talk! Juliet, she and I, are obsessed.

I'm having to do all the driving since Mr M's stroke which is definitely good for me. Since my accident in 2015 I have wriggled out if it where I can. But I need to do it, so me and Fizzy, we are just getting on with it :up

I went back to KW volunteering on Wednesday morning just gone; everybody was pleased to see me, and some of the residents said they had missed me. We played our word game at 11:00 - 3 times in fact - and I found the 9 letter word quite quickly in the first 2 games, but I kept it quiet and gave a few clues a little later so that one of the residents could guess it - which they did. I couldn't see the word at all in the 3rd game, but one of the residents could and she got it! That particular lady is good at the word game and quite often gets the 9 letter word.

As I was OK at KW I must let them know at the other home that I shall resume my fortnightly visits to see the old gentleman next Wednesday.

Yesterday was service day for Jazzy down at the garage at Brockenhurst. When I took out the PCP they gave me 5 years free servicing as part of the package; this is saving me quite a lot of money as yesterday the service would have cost me £230.

Jab day for Mina today. 10:15 is the magic time so I must lure her into the kitchen at 09:45 where her cat basket awaits.

Good luck with Jab Day. OC!

Lovely to hear about you being back at Knightwood, I do love to hear about your doings there. :hugs

I'm off to the Burnt City tomorrow, with Helen and Juliet. We're staying overnight this time in the Woolwich Premier Inn and having THREE performances! :eek (I was supposed to do this a few weeks ago, we had to reschedule due to a certain someone so selfishly having a stroke !)

I'll post the Chat link on the board but I won't be there tonight, however I will be next week! so keep the place alive for me!

Lovely sunny weather this week isn't it?

I’m off to Auld Reekie tonight. The train is full of people going to Harry Styles concert. Clothes appears to be optional! 😱🙈🤣

MYF and I got back from our holiday on Wednesday. We managed to pack a lot in - snorkelling on reefs, deep sea fishing, Mayan temples, jetskiing, paddle boarding, eating some amazing food, drinking too many Margaritas, karaoke (MYF made me sing Back Street Boys - this is cruel and unusual punishment), riding a mechanical bull, getting thrown off said bull - I think that's everything. We both have really nice suntans which is good and lots of itchy insect bites, which isn't. We were out for 18 days which I think is the longest holiday I've ever had but it felt just right - had a great time but I was ready to come home.

It's good you both had a very good time WR - but it's always nice to be back home after a longish time away.

Mina was duly jabbed at the vets, and while her mouth was being examined I noticed her teeth looked a bit horrid. The vet noted that her gums looked sore, and we have agreed that when I am back from Iceland I shall book her in for dentistry - the vet thought that there would be at least 2 extractions plus some teeth cleaning. Unfortunately her mouth is specifically exempt from the pet insurance re dental problems because of pre-existing gingivitis, but after she has been dealt with she will feel much more comfortable. So their virtual cash register will ring out merrily in July.

@WR your holiday sounds like it was fabulous. It must be great to be able to spend time with YYF.

@OC, poor Mina. Things can creep up on cats quite quickly.

Lopsie has a slight limp for the last few days which I have been keeping an eye on. It hasn’t stopped her chasing a fly which came into the house the other day. She is currently in the cattery, having arrived there yesterday morning. I pick her up tomorrow morning. It’s been a little holiday for her as I have been in York. I wish I could tell you stories of the marvellous architecture and walks around the town. Unfortunately it’s an athletics trip. We travelled on the team bus yesterday and stayed at a permier inn in Goole last night. The athletics was at York university which is a couple of miles outside of the town centre.
I’m currently on the way back and we will be crossing the England-Scotland border shortly.
We’ll stop at Gretna Services then it’s a couple of hours from there then around a 40 minute drive home and I expect to arrive around midnight.

York is a bit of a shambles. (see what I did there?)
Good luck to both cat owners with their aches and pains. Mina won't know what hit her, poor thing. OC should stop whinging about the cost or I'll set Merry onto you. :whip

I think OC would sell his HOUSE to keep his cats in comfort so definitely no :whip required! (at least, not for OC! :D

What interesting updates from everyone! Fabulous holiday by the sounds of it, WR! I know what you mean about being pleased to come home and eat normal food and drink tea rather than margaritas for a while... but then you can plan another when ready!

Sorry we won't be hearing about any architecture, Patience - but i hope you have a good time anyway.

Got back from Woolwich yesterday. The Burnt City was, as it always is, like stepping into an amazing, exciting dream. I might write something about it in my Burnt City topic as a couple of interfesting things happened, including taking a ride on the Uber Boat! It went amazingly fast! :eek Tornado Clipper

(an amusing tale: I sent a picture of this to Tom with the name of the boat clearly visible and told him it went really fast and 'I wonder what it's powered by?' Tom replied, "errrr, tomatoes?!"

I thought he was just making a funny eco joke, like potato-powered radios, until minutes later he realised he had misread Tornado Clipper for Tomato Clipper)

:D :toast Eccs!

I am putting a new router on today which may or may not be a simple job.... the router is identical to the current incumbent which seems to have broken, ie it no longer shows a 5G wi-fi . But I have a complicated set-up with lots of port forwards and address reservations, so if it won't accept the current router's config file, there will be lots of fiddly bits to do.

Wish me luck!

Got called to the yard early yesterday because poor Clara is still struggling with her feet. I was given the task (as Juliet is at work) of administering Bute (basically horse-sized dose of Ibuprofen). I had to dissolve the Bute powder in applejuice so she wouldn't notice the taste, then mix it with a scoop of feed, carrots and apples, give her that while the other horse had a similar feed minus Bute, and keep a wary eye in case they tried to steal each other's, as they do!

She doesn't seem unhappy and was following me around the field, but obviously it's a concern.

It does seem to be getting a little easier adding things to your network these days. I got a new printer/scanner/photocopier and as soon as I turned it on it detected my router and asked if I wanted to connect to it, then asked for the router password and checked for software upgrades. The whole set-up took 5 minutes. Replacing the router prrobably needs a little more thought but hopefully shouldn't be too traumatic.

Thank you both!

After a firmware upgrade, it accepted the config file from the old router, so no tedious settings to put back in! Hurrah! (a few tiny glitches along the way but essentially, painless!)

The odd thing is I put the old one back on again today to see if a firmware upgrade would fix it so I had a spare. It refused the firmware, but all of a sudden, the 5G wi-fi started working again.... :bash :mad

Not so bad an outcome really, as it means I have a working spare, but still.... it was as if I had removed it from the room, sat it on the naughty step for a while to think over its bad behaviour, and now it had shuffled sheepishly back in and promised to be good.

Honestly! computers!
