Yodel!
Here's Melanie und Familie with their pre-Christmas song; if you click through to Youtube you can read the translation, but here it is anyway.
A yodel for the Christ Child, we like to bring him
because he gotta listen the joy of Christmas
A yodel for the Christ Child sounds today through the night
the angel of the Lord has brought the message.
100 days, it is winter and it is the white snow
quiet I hear the bells of the church in the neighborhood
All the hubbub is forgotten, finally the time has come:
happy,happy Christmas Time.
A yodel for the Christ Child, we like to bring him
because he gotta listen the joy of Christmas
A yodel for the Christ Child sounds today through the night
the angel of the Lord has brought the message.

A yodel for the Christ Child sounds today through the night
the angel of the Lord has brought the message.

Nothing Christmassy about this one - Hackbrett Meets Boogie-Woogie! I think this is a lot of fun.

Time for the late Franzl Lang, this time wearing a traditional Bavarian hat that looks a bit like a turkey or peacock displaying its feathers.

And Franzl Lang wasn't called Jodelkönig for nothing.

Can cows dance? It seems they can in Switzerland, because this tune is called Tanz der Kühe. Nicolas isn't wearing his earring but the double bass player is. The double bass chap also plays the hammered dulcimer but that's not in this video. One thing I like about these folk music concerts in a gasthaus-type setting is the fact that all the tables seem to hold large numbers of glasses and booze...................cheers!

Beautiful song, Tom, and movingly played!
My Nan (is she an Oma? grandmother?) bought me a gorgeous Glockenspiel when I was about 10. I was absolutely entranced with it and spent hours with it, but never learned to play it properly. It had the most glorious mellow, resonant tone. I wish we still had it!Cheers to my Oma for gifting me with this glorious instrument.

Glockenspiel is one of those German words that is used in English too (along with Kindergarten, Kachelofen and Rucksack).
And yes, Oma is the German word for grandma.

Afi og Amma in Icelandic for grandfather and grandmother - you can see a common root there with the word for grandmother.

Here we are at the Appenzell Cheese Festival to enjoy a dulcimer duet with piano accompaniment. Everybody seems to be suitably turned out in their folk costumes!

Today we are in Leavenworth, a small town in Washington State. Since the 1960s it has made a big effort to model itself on an Alpine basis and calls itself The Bavarian Village. I think the ultimate incentive is to attract tourists; it certainly looks very Alpine with the traditional architecture imported from Bavaria, Switzerland and Austria. Boasting a population of around 2,250 Leavenworth is the same size as Gimli in Manitoba, home of the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba every August.
Here's what somebody posted on Youtube; I don't know if there is a collective noun for a gathering of Alpenhorn.

You're quite the singer, I love this!TRavine wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 2:32 pm So, since you seem interested in Alpine music and culture, I thought I'd serenade y'all. It's the official federal anthem of Upper Austria and a pretty good example of a dialect song which most people outside of the area will have trouble understanding. I remember singing this in primary school.
The lyrics are:
Homeland homeland,
you I like so very much
like a child its mother
a dog its owner
like a child its mother
a dog its owner.
I ran through the valley
I lay atop of the hill
and your sun dried me
after your rains drenched me
and your sun dried me
after your rains drenched me

Nicolas Senn with some more musical friends. Judging by the audience it looks as if they are somewhere in Canton Appenzell. Some of these Swiss look quite pleased with themselves, including some of the band!

I can't let Christmas go by without another blast of Franzl Lang. The start of this video reminds me of the intro of a long-gone comedy programme whose intro began with a stuttering 'It.ttt.......ttsss...........Mo........nt...........' and then Liberty Bell would take over; this time it's a German musician trying to agree that Franzl is the best yodeller in the world if I understand him correctly.

He's so good!! I need to ask my parents if they know him. I had never heard of him before you first posted a video of him, OC. My bad, really.OurCreature wrote: ↑Sat Dec 24, 2022 11:55 am I can't let Christmas go by without another blast of Franzl Lang.
