12 Days of Christmas
12 Days of Christmas
When did the 12 Days of Christmas begin? And when does it end? Are/were there celebrations after that.
I always used to think that the 12 Days of Christmas and ended at Christmas, until I learned otherwise.
How interesting.

12 Days of Christmas
I always thought it was started on Christmas Day and ended day before epiphany and we took the decorations down by then or else it was bad luck all year.
This board uses the days as countdown to Christmas though so these days whatever and we should be lucky still allowed Christmas at all and it's not decimalised into 10 days of non religious mentioning winter festival.
In the olden days when could only travel by foot or horse or boat it took 12 days to get round all your relatives and friends so I suppose it started when people were rich enough to give presents and all the presents were invented.
The five go-eld rings is the best bit of the song.

Thanks, Furby.
I've read books where there was a Twelfth Night Ball in the story. I couldn't figure out where it started if it was before Christmas.
I was trying to find the right countdown. I thought that it was supposed to end AT Epiphany, but now I'm realizing that it's just before.
We Canadians have a Canuck version of that song...I should find the lyrics.
Ugh...the search comes up with some dumb song that's ridiculous. I should add that the one I'm thinking of comes from a book called "A Porcupine in a Pine Tree" by Helaine Becker.
On the first day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
A porcupine in a pine tree.
On the second day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Two caribou
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the third day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Three beaver tails
Two caribou
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the fourth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Four calling moose
Three beaver tails
Two caribou
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the fifth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Five Stanley Cups
Four calling moose
Three beaver tails
Two caribou
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the sixth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
Two caribou,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the seventh day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
Two caribou,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the eighth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Eight Mounties munching,
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the ninth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Nine loons canoeing,
Eight Mounties munching,
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the tenth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Ten Leafs a-leaping,
Nine loons canoeing,
Eight Mounties munching,
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the eleventh day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Eleven puffins piping,
Ten Leafs a-leaping,
Nine loons canoeing,
Eight Mounties munching,
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me:
Twelve cubs a-dancing,
Eleven puffins piping,
Ten Leafs a-leaping,
Nine loons canoeing,
Eight Mounties munching,
Seven sled dogs sledding,
Six squirrels curling,
Five Stanley Cups,
Four calling moose,
Three beaver tails,
And a porcupine in a pine tree.
The Leafs are the Toronto Leafs hockey team, Mounties are the country's police service, the Stanley Cup is the trophy of hockey, and 5 can be either the number the Edmonton Oilers won ever or the consecutive number a Can team won it (which would be the Montreal Canadiens). and dog sledding is popular in the north...I have a friend in my province whose dad does it, and she has too...

I was going to protest about 'how can you have five Stanley Cups?" and then I read the notes. ;-)

12 Days of Christmas
In Iceland they let off loads of fireworks on the last night of Christmas, but not as many as they do for New Year. They have bonfires as well and many people can be seen dragging their Xmas trees to the local bonfire for incineration. It's quite a long time since I was in Iceland for both sets of fireworks.
Fjóla used to put up special curtains just for the 12 days of Christmas but I don't know whether she still does.

Like the late Chaircat Midge, I am not always right.

Loving these alternative versions!
Two caribou has a pleasing sound to it!
I liked ten juicy fish heads. I was thinking I wouldn't much want to eat a fish head. And then I remembered I have eaten Cod Cheeks which were pretty nice, just a round chunk of tender cod.
Oh, I like Fjola's tradition there, OC! I hope she still hangs her curtains.
We once had an advent candle, which you burned down about an inch a day to the next line. I was so thrilled with that and looked forward to doing it every day. And then the next year I bought another, but never bothered with it!

You should buy four candles.

I think that's lovely, Eccs! Decorative and useful with humour.

I think I need to hear it or find the pronunciation of the words.... because...well...DaisyNinjaGirl wrote: ↑Tue Nov 14, 2023 5:11 am I was going to protest about 'how can you have five Stanley Cups?" and then I read the notes. ;-)

I love it. It's a magical foreign language all of its own.
