PC keeps starting in bios when starting from cold

Post by eccles »

Yesterday, when starting my PC from cold it would request a reset of the bios before proceeding to Windows. It did it again today. Once started I could shut down Windows and restart it again as long as I didn't turn it off at the wall, in which case the problem arose again. The clue to the cause of the error was that the system clock was wrong. The solution, replace the cmos battery on the motherboard. I think this is the first time I've ever had to change it on any PC over the years but fortunately it uses the same CR2032 as my car key and I had a spare. I had to open the PC and unplug the graphics card to find it but once replaced all is back to normal.
My PC motherboard is about five years old.

Ohhh wd for sorting that out, Detective Eccles.

I've had a few similar problems, and eventually noticed the system clock was out and I hadn't spotted it! I also had to change the CMOS battery once which I thought would be scary but was actually not too bad.
