Another pic.

Honestly, I could weep at the stupidity and loss

I'm really sad about the tree, but, somehow the randomness of this comment made me laugh
It won Tree of the Year in 2016.

I saw that and it's very sad but is happening everywhere and isn't sadder because a tree was in a film. I did learn from the story that trees are painted in advance to mark out trees to chop down and I remember ours having paint and wondered why at the time.

Its a problem for many reasons. Trees can't be built back for decades or hundreds of years in some cases and are needed for all this net zero target stuff so we will all have to be even colder and hungrier and more locked down travel wise without as many trees. Maybe the orange paint gang should set themselves to finding the tree choppers and stopping them instead of people going to work.

Now that sounds like a good plan!

It's sad to think there's someone out there who thought this would be a funny prank, if that was the only motive. It was probably meant for Tik-Tok :cry

With it being such an iconic tree, I wondered if it is practical to dig up another and transplant it. With the extensive root system of an old tree it might not be practical but as long as sufficient root ball can be kept quite a large tree can be transplanted if the will is there to do it.
Canadians are evidently good at it.

It's so sad. I really wish a tree could replace it. The mind boggling stupidity and lack of respect for anyone on anything seriously makes my blood boil. Bloody vandals.

Current talk is to allow the roots to send out coppices which will eventually form a new tree, but it won't look the same even after a hundred years.

It would be lovely to have some hope that it will be back again in some form

Two people have been arrested by Northumbria police. Why are the police being secretive with the details? And when was the last time someone was lynched in England?

A very astute observation there Asy. :D

There has never been a recorded case of lynching in England - defined loosely as when a mob pursues somebody and the pursued person dies.

There have been 2 cases of lynching in Glasgow in the 20th century. The first was in 1922 when an innocent man who was taking his poorly dressed 'honorary' nephew by tram across Glasgow to visit the boy's father was assumed by the tram passengers and conductor to be a child molester. The passengers etc whipped themselves up into a frenzy, a gang of youths pursued the poor chap when he managed to escape from the tram and killed him.

The second was in 1994 and can only loosely be described as a lynching because no pursuit by a crowd was involved. A convicted child molester answered a knock at his door and a woman doused him with petrol and set fire to him which set fire to his hall and door as well. He tried to escape by breaking a kitchen window and clinging to a drainpipe two floors up. A hostile crowd gathered below, shouting abuse. However, the child molester survived.

I thought there was a lynching in the Notting Hill riots in the late 1950s when the homes of West Indians were attacked by mobs and it lasted for a fortnight; the Metropolitan Police were at pains to pretend in their official announcements, testimonies to Inquiries etc that racism had little to do with it all which just shows how ingrained and long-standing dishonesty and racism is in Met Police culture. I was wrong about the lynching.
Like the late Chaircat Midge, I am not always right.

oh my freaking lands. He needs to be sent to tree planting boot camp by hand with no perks (it's stinkin' hard work). Among other things.

In the UK being arrested is nothing people have to be charged and then it's illegal to mention names until after the trial which takes a year hoping most people forget by then.

I think it's evil thing myself but from a legal point is it really even a crime. Just stealing a tree isn't it really and thefts under 200 pounds are allowed with no investigation never mind punishment now so how much is tree. Its a lot of wood so might just make 200 pounds.

I read that the men were charged with destruction of irreplaceable property. In that event, the property owner can put a very high monetary value on the property and the defense is left trying to establish a lesser value. In this case, I doubt the defense will succeed in such an endeavor.

One of the cut down trees in Furby park has grown new shoots so it does happen. Only one though out of dozens of stumps so the sycamore gap tree will have to be lucky.
