Tough 2 (17 September)

Post by OurCreature »

Today's puzzlers. I could have answered three of them straight away but would have had to think about the rest - probably unsuccessfully!

9 Labradoodle; coffee pods; pop-up ads; shopping malls?
10 Victoria Woodhull, 1872; Belva Lockwood, 1884 and 1888; Margaret Chase Smith, 1964?
11 Buenos Aires (4); Montevideo (3); Canberra (2); Wellington (1)?
12 Met Sultan al-Kamil; tamed a wolf; preached to birds; received stigmata on La Verna?
13 G; PG; PG-13; R; NC-17?
14 Speak Now; Red; 1989; Reputation; Eras?
15 Mr Jaggers and Sydney Carton; Jonathan Harker; Atticus Finch; Mark Darcy?
Like the late Chaircat Midge, I am not always right.

It's got to be St Francis of Assisi. He was quite a good poet, actually.

13 G; PG; PG-13; R; NC-17?
Film ratings. That seems too easy...

14 Speak Now; Red; 1989; Reputation; Eras?
Are these music band tours? Isn't the Taylor Swift tour Eras or something like that?

15 Mr Jaggers and Sydney Carton; Jonathan Harker; Atticus Finch; Mark Darcy?
Sydney Carton was the guy in A Tale of Two Cities who stood in for the male romantic lead at the guillotine (no idea who Mr Jaggers is. Jonathan Harker the lawyer's clerk and male romantic lead of Dracula. Atticus Finch the lawyer in To Kill a Mocking Bird. Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones' Diary. Are they all fictional lawyers?

10. Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to stand for president of the USA but I don't know the others.
11. These are the world's most southerly capital cities in order.
15. Mr Jaggers is a lawyer in Great Expectations so I think Daisy is correct.

Sometimes these qs and their answers provoke in me the sarcastic reaction 'Of Course! How could I have not known that?!' and #9 is one such example. WR got the link for #10 although he didn't state it explicitly so a full point there, and the same policy for Daisy with #13 and the US film classifications. So 6/7 for the Team but #9 is such an impossible and unfair question so it's really a full house so far as I'm concerned so :clap everybody.

9 Inventions regretted by their creators.
10 First women to stand for US presidency.
11 World’s southernmost capital cities.
12 Incidents from the life of St Francis of Assisi.
13 Film ratings in the US.
14 Tours by Taylor Swift.
15 Fictional lawyers: Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities; Dracula; To Kill a Mockingbird; Bridget Jones’s Diary.
