I hope it’s okay to post on here even though I don’t write any N&S fics - I’m an avid reader of it though!
Just finding a pencil sharpener for one of my kids who claimed there wasn’t one anywhere and told her “you have to look hard”, and realised I always say that with a bit of a Manchester accent, because I’m unconsciously channelling Mr Thornton in the BBC adaptation. I had a chuckle to myself and wondered whether other people (deliberately or inadvertently) work lines from the book/series into their lives, and in what situations? (I do this with lots of other books too, for my own amusement really, and to spot the kindred spirits who will get the quotations!)

Oh my word! That's so awesome! Our whole family does it, from all kinds of books, movies and even songs, and Adventures in Odyssey. I think I'm going to use the "What excellent boiled potatoes" line the next time there's an awkward pause in the dinner conversation (or an argument).Rosa wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 2:43 pm I hope it’s okay to post on here even though I don’t write any N&S fics - I’m an avid reader of it though!

I do this all the time. It's rare when someone gets it - but awesome when they do.Rosa wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 2:43 pm I hope it’s okay to post on here even though I don’t write any N&S fics - I’m an avid reader of it though!

My family does this all the time with quotes from all the different movies we've watched. I'll have to think if I use any from N&S though.

Ha! This! Yes! All the time.

I'm in the habit of answering questions I don't know the answer to with the "I wouldn' knoowh" John says to Mr Bell in the scene in the street with the Latimers, where Bell asks him if it isn't right that every young woman should have their secrets.

"I'm not sure I'd know how to dabble." 8-)

Magda has used "you have to look 'ard" on discord and it cracks me up. I have a current fixation with Mr T presenting his peaches. I need to work that line from the book into my life

There is a quote I know I use from N&S but my family doesn't know it since they are not as familiar with N&S as I am. I will often say to my kids "You know what to do." with the pitch and cadence of Hamper(?) at the dinner party when speaking of the man whose children were starving, he said "Well, he knows what to do - go back to work."

Okay, I often (*very* often) say
