Apologies to the bug haters but I couldn't resist posting this one as it is my first genuinely patrolling southern hawker dragonfly guarding his patch which is my garden pond. AND I got an in-flight snap of him as well. Of course if Mrs SH turns up and drops eggs into the pond there will be young, which will grow to be voracious predators which will no doubt tuck into next year's tadpoles. Nature tooth and nail all in a ten foot by eight foot patch of water and vegetation!
The scummy background is the pond; the result of the birds from next door's feeders having a quick splash to cool off after squabbling over the food my lovely next door neighbour June the Bird Lady has put in her feeders.
