12. These are major US sporting trophies - The Earl of Derby was a Stanley and the Stanley Cup is the most important ice hockey trophy; the Vince Lombardi trophy goes to the Superbowl champions in American football; Larry O'Brien was commissioner of the NBA in the 80s so I'd guess the major basketba...

Confusingly the river that Austin stands on is called the Colorado but it is not the same Colorado river that passes through the Grand Canyon and that the Zephyr passes. It did go dark and incredibly quickly - even at 90% coverage it was still like normal daylight but 3 minutes later it was pitch bl...

We got back from the US yesterday after a terrific 2 weeks. Highlights were The Sphere which is simply awe inspiring and the Grand Canyon which is just as amazing in a completely different way. We were lucky enough to be in Austin on Monday so we saw the total eclipse which was truly a once in a lif...

March - The beginning of Summer

We are getting excited for our trip to Austin and Las Vegas. We are packed and ready or our 8 a.m. pick-up tomorrow and I've booked loads of stuff to do - helicopter trip down the Grand Canyon and sunset dinner at the bottom followed by flying over the lights of Las Vegas, quad biking in the Nevada ...

8. MYF and I did the tour of Blandy's Wine Lodge last year on our holiday in Funchal so I can say with certainty this is Madeira. I agree with Furby that some lyrics are very difficult to decipher. Peter Kay did a very funny sketch about it - if you haven't seen it it is welll worrth a watch https:/...

11. Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis, the fates from Greek mythology. Spun the thread, measured the thread and cut the thread of life.
#10 is interesting - hadn't heard that but the names sound very Khanesque.

Insurgents attack Kursk and Belgorad oblasts in West Russia

I find it sad how short people's memories are. Abbott was best buddies with Bernie Grant, one of the biggest racists on the planet, said white EU citizens shouldn't be given NHS jobs, supported the IRA and got suspended last year for saying that the racism suffered by Jews and other minority groups ...

I think a major part of the problem is that so many GPs are part time now. In my practice only two GPs out of 15 are full time but they take on additional patients as if they were all full time. I think it's a consequence of two things - firstly the insanely generous pay and pension settlement given...

Not lowering the tone but slightly amusing was a former colleague of mine whose name was Aula Robertson. Nothing amusiing there but it caused a great deal of mirth when she announced her engagement to a guy called Steve Board. She wisely kept her maiden name.

Stocks and Shares ISA

I use A J Bell. They charge 0.25% of the ISA value per year i.e. £25 on a £10,000 ISA and 'I've found them very good - easy to understand website and helpful staff. I don't think OC is quite right in his analysis - normally he is right to say you can't transfer shares from outside an ISA into an ISA...

That does sound promising overall OC though I don't think you need to be a consultant to figure out that if you have a patient with a slow heartbeat, taking them off a drug that slows their heartbeat is probably a good plan. Maybe the irregular heartbeat is your body taking time to get used to the c...
