13. I think these are words ending in "anna" but I only know "manna" and "savanna". DNG's "goanna" fits for Australian lizard.

Northern Lights last night, wow!

Actually there are investigations into using satellites to beam sunlight in one form or another onto collectors on earth to generate electrical power. My feeling is that the world is overheating as it is so the last thing you want is to shine even more sun onto it. https://www.theguardian.com/scienc...

Bittern

Bittern was an answer in this week's quiz, so I dug out a snap of one that I'd made in 2017 from the Avalon Hide at RSPB Ham Wall nature reserve. Right click and select image for large view.

Tough 1 (11 May)

3 Which singer was nicknamed the Empress of the Blues? There were two famous female blues singers of old, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. The latter was a protege of the former with the student eventually surpassing the master. Therefore I'm guessing that the answer is Bessie Smith. 5 “The Banker – Hims...

Northern Lights last night, wow!

My bedroom window faces north and I looked out a couple of times after the street lights had been turned off but all I saw was high cloud. Well done Juliet for capturing it.

Opinion Polls

Yougov only polls those who are unhappy enough with the status quo that they can be bothered to go to the website and express their dissatisfaction, which leads to very polarised results. So I agree that their usefulness is questionable. The main thing you can take from them is the assertion that no...

I imagine spudgers aren't supplied with mobile phones because most phones have the battery integrated into the construction to keep the device thin. Which obviously means that in about five years when the battery expires you have to buy a new phone. Except there are new EU, and presumably UK, direct...

What is the most Irish thing ever? A wealthy Texan walks into a small pub in Ireland. He slaps down $500 on the bar and announces, “I got 500 American dollars here, for any of you fellers who can drink ten pints of Guinness in a row”. Nobody says anything. Everybody looks away, or looks at the floo...

If there was an uptick option I'd uptick your comment Furby. :clap Those people are very sad, OC. Most of these door-to-door proselytisers are with religious sects from the USA where people are much more open about their religion. They send their dogma to the UK where religion, or the lack of it, is...

I wonder what happens if one day spoiled papers win. :lol Just the Police Commissioner to vote for here too. I detoured from my regular morning walk to the polling station getting there about 10:15 am. Apart from five bored looking volunteers the place was deserted. It looks like it's going to be a...

If I was Rishi Sunak I'd drop a note to Joe "I'm Irish ain't I?" Biden about the threat of Irish border patrols and the risk to the GFA. Of course if he is ousted in November by Trump then the new White House administration might well support a wall.

The English channel boat people and Ireland

It looks like Ireland is in a bit of a kerfuffle over the UK's illegal migrants. This is because, according to the Irish government, thousands of them are turning up in Northern Ireland and walking across the open border into the republic in order to escape possible deportation to Rwanda. Because of...

I have a guilty secret that caused me to miss chat (again).
