Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes is warning voters that Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's policies, particularly his efforts to boost bike riding, are "converting Denver into a United Nations community."
"This is all very well-disguised, but it will be exposed," Maes told about 50 supporters who showed up at a campaign rally last week in Centennial.
Maes said in a later interview that he once thought the mayor's efforts to promote cycling and other environmental initiatives were harmless and well-meaning. Now he realizes "that's exactly the attitude they want you to have."
"This is bigger than it looks like on the surface, and it could threaten our personal freedoms," Maes said.
When they have their bike rides helped by the police, people can't even get to the rail stations in a taxi. True Story.A bicycle is very useful in Oxford.
I used to ride my bike everywhere, in all weathers - 6 mile daily journey to school with heavy bag on handlebars and tennis racket clipped to frame (my girls just do not believe this story but it is True) plus 3 miles there and back at nights to my bar/waitress job, and 5 miles with Mumsy to get our weekly Sainsbury shop - carried in bags on the handlebars, as before - this was the highlight of our week and was great fun.
I was only knocked off three times and only once to an unconscious/ambulance scenario, but Mumsy was not so lucky and was hit by a car which broke her pelvis and both legs. She got some compensation for that, and she used it to buy a nice new bike. "There is no alternative!" was one of her favourite sayings when I whinged.
Kids nowadays... don't know they're born.. mutter grumble
"This is bigger than it looks like on the surface, and it could threaten our personal freedoms," Maes said.
Freedom to stick their heads in the sand, ignoring world agendas on carbon emissions, pollute the planet with gas guzzling SUVs, forget the rising cost of oil in dollars and environmental damage, and perpetuate American obesity is what he really means. I wonder which oil company is paying him.
