The education secretary is concerned that "rich, thick kids" achieve more than their "poor, clever" peers even before they start school. So he is apparently going to privatise all schools - give control to the churches - allow concerned parents to run schools.

Not sure how it helps if some areas have schools financed and run by/for the rich while other schools are run by/for the people on a sink estate. The divide will be especially sharp once the new housing benefit rules clear out the riff raff from the decent areas.

I wonder what they will be allowed to teach. Will it be up to the special interest group that controls the school?

Will they teach that there is one true god or that there is only one true political party?

"We want choices for children," he said. "There are concerns about inappropriate faith groups using this legislation to push their own agenda, but we have been working on the regulations to ensure that we don't have any extremist groups taking over schools."

Right... but somehow I doubt he will consider Christian churches as extremist will he.

And once again where is the choice if you hear that the local state school has been replaced with one run by the church of the sacred left handed spoon.

Gove told MPs that he encouraged atheists to start their own schools.

I approve of that, but to me that's like saying "if anyone wants to start a school which doesn't abuse its authority then go ahead". It should be the only kind allowed.

Groan at that word 'choice'.  People on the whole don't want 'choice' - which they are not too stupid to realise means that instead of one good local school, hospital, etc, that there is someone else, probably a richer someone, getting a better deal.

I am also slightly concerned that atheism may itself be declared 'extremist' and 'inappropriate'.  We get told often enough that atheism is in itself a religion (like there is Something) to disbelieve in) so by that logic it is just one step further to declare it is extreme and that schools shouldn't be run by atheists but by decent god-believing people (it doesn't matter which god as any god is better than no god -  :rofl )

I want to set up a school based on the
"There-Might-Be-Something-Out-There-That-We-Don't-Know-About-But-It's-Probably-Not-A-God Order of Agnostics"

That is exactly right, merry (especially about traducing the word "choice". Cynical bastards). Makes me despair, really. :(  :(  :(
