They hide in the woods, and you have to look carefully to find them. They are an endangered species in several states.

But of course Virginia isn't one of those. The state of Virginia is not known for haste in protecting endangered species, alas.

So we may eventually have the last ones. Don't tell anyone we've got 'em, eh? People like to dig them up and try to transplant them, which generally fails.  :rolleyes

Hope you are having a good weekend, Furbs!

Any idea what orchid it is, Asy? It looks a little like our butterfly orchid. We get bee, common spotted, early purple, pyramid and green winged quite often around here.
Galearis spectabilis.

Common names include: showy orchid, purple orchid, purple hooded orchid, gay orchid, and sometimes seen as "orchis" instead of "orchid".

It is native to Virginia. So if you see them commonly in England, then I withdraw my comment that they dont transplant well.  ;)

Early purple orchid is... purple and isn't the same as yours. I checked Wiki for more pics and yours is quite different to any of the UK species that I know.
Thanks for the info. :)
/Eccs grinds his teeth at 'digging up orchids'. Set the hounds on them, Asy!

I really enjoyed that evening walk alongside o'you, Asy  :hug
So many sights to see and ever changing I'm sure. Thanks for those, Asy.  :thumbs
Thanks for stopping by, Panikos and Merry.

Eccles, careful with the tooth grinding, it may eventually require dental repair. But I know what you mean.

Here's a clip from eBay:

"Up for bid are 5 Showy Orchis  aka Galearis spectabilis (Orchis spectabilis).  Buy NATIVE PLANTS!

This is a rare find and when I am sold out that is it!"

Note the language "rare find". These haven't been cultured in a nursery, somebody dug them up out of the forest.

I'm still searching for my first pogonia. They are orchids which were widespread in this region, but now have nearly vanished. I keep thinking, if the Galearis like our woods, maybe the pogonias are hiding there as well.

It's the right time of year for pogonias to bloom, so we search every time we hike. So far, nothing, but we keep scouting the grounds.  :D
