The real onset of Spring/Summer is marked in eccles-land by the first emergence of damselflies. The first of these is invariably the large red damselfly, although the designation 'large' is misleading as they are, from antennae to tail, only about 1-1/4" long.
Shapwick Heath on the Somerset Levels is a huge nature reserve that links with several others to provide habitat for many species including birds, bats, and dragons and damsels. Late this year due to the hard winter, large reds made an appearance today when I visited with my photographing pal, although judging by their appearance they have been around for a couple of days. They are pale when first emerged from the nymph and take a couple of days to assume their usual colouration.
These are snapped with a dedicated macro lens that can get very close.

Wow! words (nearly
) fail me at those. Look at the incredible detail on those - see the iridescence on the body in the second pic - and in the first, the amazing 'netting' effect on those delicate wings.
I'm glad summer's coming with our Eccles out and about with his cam
If the end of the world starts, you will be on the ground to notice first and tell us won't you.
I am sure the insects rule the world really and we just don't notice.
