I'm not usually a dog person, but this spaniel was enjoying chasing after a ball so much that I couldn't resist a picture. The idea with this sort of action shot is to pan as smoothly as you can to follow the target with continuous autofocus, then snap the shutter several times as you pan through.

So that's the theory but what it's mostly about is luck. The more shots you take, the better chance you have of getting something decent, which is the big advantage with digital - you can just discard all the bad ones. I took around ten, discarded half a dozen immedately and a couple more later. I  kept two although I was only happy with the one below.

Happy DOG chasing a ball.

Happy Cat not being chased.

what a super pic, Eccles! Can we have a cat one next please??  :)
Good title for it  :thumbs he's practically flying there. Caught him just right in the end.

You probably wouldn't get an action shot of a cat. I bet you could do one called 'relaxation' though :)

Wonderful picture, Eccs.  I bet his owner would have loved to see that!  You caught that beautifully - his sheer zest and vividness shines through.  And it is a most pleasing composition, too.

Midge 1 looks as if he has been possessed by an alien entity in that pic - those eyes!  :eek

And for Chrissie, a Midge lookalike lies in wait for unwary birds.
That a nice Picture of a Cat.

It the flash wot got to old Midge's eyes, Merry.

Wonderful dog photo, eccles! It is just totally joyful.

Love the cat photos too. Midge is elegance personified, or rather felineified.

We have a cat who runs everywhere, climbs the tallest trees, and is generally gleeful. He spent the first six months of his life in a cage, before he came home with us, and I think he feels he has to make up for a lot of lost time.

I should make clear, that Midge 1 not me, it the grand old boy wot was very fond of Our Gran, and used to sleep next to her pillow usually whenever he went to stay with her.
