Suddenly today or yesterday I have started to receive a pop-up message purporting to be from Internet Explorer Security which says:-

A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer.

It then tells me that the program will open outside of Protected mode.

It then gives the name and publisher (presumably of the program) which is always McAfee, Inc.

The websites which have triggered this off are perfectly normal ones like Yahoo and Hard-Facts, and also my bank account website.   At first, on Yahoo and a couple of other normal sites, I clicked on Allow because I misread the warning and thought it was McAfee wanting access.   As McAfee provide the security for my ISP I thought it was a legitimate request, but after the first 2 pop-ups I'm not so sure.   So now I click on the don't allow button.

I'd quite like to get rid of this pop-up without turning off Internet Protection, but don't know how to.   My other concern is that my computer may have picked up some malware, which is rather disturbing because I have run a full security scan using McAfee and it said my PC is all right with no security issues.

All advice gratefully received.

Mike

I'm just reading about that as I don't quite see what triggers it, but I can say that it's a perfectly normal thing to see on Vista/Windows 7 etc. Apparently just a precautionary thing rather than a serious danger if it's a site that you trust.

I 'think' though am not sure yet that the reason Mcafee has its name there is because it is standing between you and the net and acting as go-between.

This is from an ISP's FAQ

10. I'm trying to install Plusnet Assist and I get a message about trusting the website, should I?

Depending on your version of Windows you might see a message like this:

'A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer. This program will open outside of Protected mode. Internet Explorer's Protected mode helps protect your computer. If you do not trust the website, do not open this program.'

This message is explaining that Plusnet Assist will see if it can reach the Internet to check if you have any connection problems. It does this by checking that you can get to Yahoo.com, BT.com and Google.com. Please click Allow if you see this message.

As it is a similar situation (McAfee goes to websites to check they are safe) it would seem safe enough then to say 'allow/yes' to McAfee.

It would be nice though to get a more complete/definite answer from microsoft. but when I paste that msg into MS support search it gives a server error. :bash :lol

Will let you know if I can find out any more.

OC, Do you use Norton Internet Security AND McAfee?

I just found a mention of this same problem (was McAfee in the msg too) when using Norton's both SafeWeb and McAfee's Site Advisor which do similar things

No, I do not use Norton (I regard it as only slightly less harmful than the plague) I use McAfee as it is the basis of BTNetProtect Plus, but I activated McAfee Site Advisor when I first began using my computer.   BT is my ISP.

The message I get is exactly the same as the one quoted in the Plusnet query.

OC, I have gotten that message from time to time, out of nowhere, for no apparent reason.

After a while, I get tired of clicking "allow", and click "dont show me this message again".

Nothing dire happens after doing that, in my experience. And since the situation arises again after weeks to months of tranquility, I assume clicking "dont show me this message again" doesn't immobilize McAfee for the rest of the century.

Still dont know what triggers that message after prolonged silence, possibly the moon in alignment with Alpha Centauri?

I think asy is right about just clicking allow and 'don't ask again'.  Mcafee does have to run to check web pages in order to do it's job. I'm just surprised they don't warn you about that in the first place.

I'm still on XP which doesn't do protected mode so I've not had to deal with this yet.

Thanks Pani and Asy - I shall do as suggested.

:D  it nice to have good friends here, as her Ladyship would say.
