Every person who owns a computer with Microsoft Windows is to be offered their choice of internet browsers in an automatic pop-up menu following an agreement today between the software company and the European Union.

In March next year all PCs will be sent a software update that will cause a window to appear on screen offering them options to the pre-installed Microsoft Explorer.

All new PCs will also offer a selection of browser options including Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome.

I think they were hoping to ship PCs without a browser, but luckily someone realised in time that you needed one in order to download alternatives.

I think it's daft and even many users of other browsers agree. They wanted to change so they did. It's hardly necessary to make a law about it.

It's Microsoft's Operating System. They should be able to put anything they like in it. Where does it stop? A popup asking if you want to choose a different control panel, different fonts or different file manager?

I agree. It would only make sense if Microsoft also offered a choice of operating systems. But then you wouldn't have bought Windows if that wasn't what you wanted, would you.  :huh

Luckily indeed.  This is exactly the sort of thing that highly trained brains miss.

People have voted with their feet (actually more like their hands) and chosen Microsoft. Rich and Clever people don't like the idea but most people just want to press a few buttons and have the easiest and cheapest lives.

I really can't believe anyone has access to the internet and is unaware of this sort of thing. T'internet is full of trolls telling people to ditch Microsoft products you can't miss them, you really don't need pop up windows.

Will Pop up blockers stop it? Have the highly trained brains thought of that.
