It is a small world isn't it.

I wouldn't be dedicated enough to have to do the closing ones every day, I would just dip in when bored and look for something I needed to win.

Which is what I did and picked a Sanyo TV (my current top need) , it is from Co-operative. I am sure it is the same one in My Co-op magazine where I have do a cross word and find the word so I hadn't sent it off yet as I only just found the mittens.

So for an online competition for complete strangers all they want is name and email but for me a loyal customer and my grandparents before me they want a crossword and an anagram. Seems unfair somehow.

And I do agree about happiness and high ability not going hand in hand, they may even be mutually exclusive. I was not high enough to go to Oxbridge and just went to a concrete university but I am very unhappy most of the time. Perhaps it is the being able to think and seeing the whole awfulness of everything all the time whereas stupid people don't have worries.

I think that is most undoubtedly the crux of it.  Too much imagination - I am sure very stupid people simply live from one moment to the next without too many what-ifs.

Marvin was very acutely observed, was he not.

I hope you win the TV!  I enjoy doing my comps and you never know what might turn up from one email ping! to the next...

Opera does seem to be so very slow to load pages especially with pictures.

It is like the old days of dialup where I see the alt text and then wait for the pictures. In IE the pictures just loaded I didn't even notice them nowadays.

I also don't like not having the zones for security, I used to have my regular sites in trusted on medium and the normal browsing on high and just turned to medium if I really needed to do something and put it back afterwards.

And I can't find the cookie settings to customise. I can switch them on and off, but not accept them from only selected sites only. Again I rejected all cookies unless I really needed to do something but had my favourite known sites on accept cookies.

Some of that is there under other names.

Tools Menu - Preferences and click the security entry on the left. You should now see Trusted Websites on the right. Not sure that's quite the same thing. Am looking at it now. I think mostly they mean you to use 'Edit Site Preferences'

Tools Menu - Quick Preferences - Edit Site Preferences will let you set lots of things for the current site including cookies.

Once you have set some Preferences for a site you can get back to those settings without having to visit the site by doing this.

Tools Menu - Preferences and click the content entry on the left. You should now see Manage Site preferences on the right which can be edited.

The bit about the way it shows the ALT text is annoying to me too and I keep trying to stop it doing that. I don't think it is particularly slow, but it make it look slow and messy as it draws.

There is a way to avoid it, but it seemed to have it's own side effects on certain sites. I'll run through it though so you can try it out and see what you think.

Tools Menu - Preferences and click the Browsing entry on the left. You should now see a Loading drop down box on the right.
If you select several seconds that might sort it. You can tell it 'redraw when loaded' which should hide it until it's got it all sorted out, but I found one or two sites where it seemed to get stuck waiting for the final item.

Thank You.

It is like studying for your A-levels again using a new program (or update) isn't it, so much to learn. No wonder most people don't bother with their settings.

I had found the Manage Site Preferences thing but there were hundreds of sites I had never knowingly been to already listed and I tried to delete them, but you have to do them one at a time and I got tired after the As. I now think they were probably trying to protect me from myself.  :( but they are gone now.

Oh and I must have something switched off here as it won't let me use smilies only the ones I know the code for which is :( and :) and possible :snowing :cry :nono

Thank you for Quick Preferences thing and having to have something set  quickly before you can set things slowly. Who would have guessed? Well you obviously but I hadn't.

This is why I hung onto IE so long. I'm getting too old to learn new things all the time and it does take so so much time.

There is still a lot I don't get.

I got a lot of ideas from Tamil's site

Not sure why no smilies, but I think I'd look to see if Allow Animated Images was ticked in edit site preferences as they work ok in mine.

Btw if you type opera:config into the address bar you get yet another page of things to alter. They are more advanced, but just in case you need to find them sometime.

If you type C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Opera into an ordinary folder address bar you should see the opera folder in which all the settings, bookmarks etc are kept. You can copy the whole folder to make it easier to put things back as they were if anything goes wrong.

I got the Smilies back , I didn't have Javascript switched on.
:)

I am resigned to just muttering for rest of my internet life now, it is so sad, I used to be such a knowing lots of things type of surfer in the old days.

That's good about the smilies  :thumbs
