I've begged and pleaded and told her she is committing treason and heresy of the most foul kind - but it's no good. For her 21st birthday in January, Jay has chosen not the Key of the Door (I wish) but this little beastie
This is termed 'the most affordable Mac' but I could make about three normal pcs for this much, even though if you order from a university network you get a £100 discount.
She assures me she has done 'lots of research' (browsing her horse forum is what she means I think
) and that 'everyone says' they are much better, more reliable and more everything than pcs. They are ready to go 'out of the box'. In fact so sweetly and so gushingly are its praises sung that I'm expecting it to leap 'out of the box' and launch into a tap-dance.
I've just bought this coveted objet a mouse. Did you know that mac-mice cost upwards of £45? no nor did I.
Admittedly it is a wireless mouse but I got one of those for Doomed for 99p.
I just bet it needs its own special MacPrinter too.
I think Chrissie's boys may be MacBoys? Any useful tips?
How about this?

Well it looks like you will have to be the guinea pig to pay the exorbitant prices and report back to us.
I know nothing of macs and believe their wonderfulness be a fiction maintained by people with more money than sense. I have never considered something that costs three times the going prices and I think you are right about the special mac mouse and the special mac printer and it will be the special mac everything and it will all cost 45 times what you are used to paying.
Still J will soon be earning 45 times what you did with the good education she now has won't she
, so it will all end happily
.
Macs do look very pretty though don't they?
The MacMouse is from Ebay though of course it may turn out to be a MacTurkey.
I don't know if they look pretty as I haven't seen one yet. I thought they were those ones that came in all shades, like Lime and Grape, but alas no
"What colour shall we have?!" (me, excited)
Crackly mobile-phone mumble-mumble from Jay.
"Well yes I should hope they jolly well should be 'all right', for £800! But what colour?"
"I said they are ALL WHITE!!"
"All white?"
Please don't say they talk like the god-awful Michael Barrymore.
I think they would have patented the color white by now if they could. Other companies don't seem to dare to use white though do they, beige or black is all you get on PCs.
I read a story about i-pods when they were new and had white headphones. Bright young things got mugged if seen with white headphones so used cheapo black ones while on the tubes. I suppose they were lucky the i-pods accepted the bog standard phones.
The way it's going anyone who can afford public transport will be at risk of getting mugged.

Hi Merry,
You are indeed right both my boys have the coveted Mac and they adore them! They both smugly grin when I am having yet more problems with Windows as their dream machines purr along - glytches are almost unheard of and no need for virus control! They are pretty to look at, Andy has the virginal white one but I am sure Jamie's is encased in brushed aluminium (but I could be wrong!). You are however right on printers as Jamie's facebook status "printers will be the death of me" suggests! Just need to check compatability before purchase.... not always as straight forward as it sounds but Apple have very helpful genius bars in their stores.
Oh and I hope you have purchased said laptop with all available student discount?
Anyway I think Jay will be thrilled with her purchase and Jamie is your geek if she has problems
catch you soon
Just spoken to Jamie who can understand people think Macs are overpriced but that you have to use the os to fully understand!! Oh and did I mention he didn't actually buy it - we did!!
He did say that he would recommend an additional purchase of 4GB of RAM for a mere £60 as this will increase longevity! His is 3 years old and has survived with 2GB.
Rumours are afoot of updates due out next year but tis ever so with computers!
One final recommendation is the applecover - well worth the money when students drop their laptops or some such accident befalls them. Has provided a new machine for older son and replacement bits for Jamie over time. But maybe J is a more careful soul than my reckless boys!
