A New Zealand church has sparked outrage by erecting a billboard depicting Mary and Joseph lying semi-nude beneath the sheets.

In an unorthodox take on the Christmas tale, the billboard depicts a forlorn Joseph and Mary looking to the sky with a caption which reads: "Poor Joseph. God is a hard act to follow."

And really rather a nice sentiment behind the initiative, too.

How unsurprising that certain parties are so ready to get their knickers in a twist and wax indignant about the supposed insult to their "2000 year old beliefs", as if religious beliefs were automatically entitled to special respect. Now you come to remind me of it, I'm off to catch up with http://www.jesusandmo.net

I liked it. I always felt sorry for Joseph who seems to have got a raw deal.

You really have to admire Mary's solution to an age old problem though. "I wasn't sleeping around, God did it!".

That's really thinking on your back feet isn't it. I think there should be a statue of her or something. :devil

I was under the impression that the idea of virgin conception was somewhat less than 2000 years old. The slip up was when the translation from Hebrew to Greek substituted 'virgin' for 'maiden'.
The belief is probably one of convenience in order to hide some unpleasantness such as adultery or premarital relations.
