Well what do horses in the wild do? Do they just stay dirty.
I am worried about poor Clyde now, won't he get sore back feet if you are economising and only buying him half the shoes.
Could you, J or Mr M train up as blacksmiths and make the shoes yourselves.
Or could you get a polish blacksmith to do them cheaper.

Actually horses don't need to be shod unless being ridden on metalled roads a lot (which he doesn't do.) And the £45 6-weekly farrier's fee includes trimming of rear feet, because Mother Nature has thought of everything and given them horny hooves like finger-nail stuff which is tough but needs filing down to keep it even. Though now I come to think of it, no manicures in the wild, are there....
