Will Horses and Ponies be affected by foot and mouth?
From the British Showjumping Association Q&A:

Q. Can my horse get FMD?

A. No.

:D

Somewhat more helpfully, the Equiworld page says:

HORSES NOT AT RISK
The British Horse Society is being inundated with calls from worried horse owners who have heard that horses would be slaughtered along with livestock on any farm infected with foot and mouth. After reports that officals had been slaughtering all livestock in infected areas including dogs and horses.

Horses would NOT have to be slaughtered. They do not get the disease, and they cannot ‘carry’ the disease in the medical sense, though they can transmit it via their hooves, just as humans can on their boots or cars do on their tyres.

Poor Clyde has been 'off work' this week with a very painful swelling on his hind leg which spread to his scrotum!   :blush  Full marks to Pony-girl who insisted there was something 'not right' even when Pam was sure he was in fine fighting form - until she gave in and had a feel herself.

Vet was called and didn't know what to diagnose, but ruled out really deadly things.  A course of anti-inflammatories and antibiotics (or the less expensive 'course of time') seem to be sorting him out.

He was very brave, and never once refused to tote his young riders around even when he must have been in pain.  (But not so brave when the lady vet wanted to take his temperature - the rear door way  ;)

Aww, get well soon Clyde.   :cuddle
It's animals with cloven hooves that can get FMD, which are pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and deer.
Thanks Patience!  I will donate the Suffering One a carrot in your name  :hug

The Devil will be at risk then?

The Devil will be at risk then?

Get well Clyde!

The Devil at risk? Who do you think started it?
