| The Scream, the art masterpiece by Edvard Munch, has been stolen from an Oslo museum by armed robbers. The Scream is Norway's best-known masterpiece Three individuals, armed and hooded, burst into the Munch Museum, home to dozens of canvases by the early modernist artist, and made off with The Scream (1893) as well as "Madonna" (1893-94). The Scream had previously been stolen from Norway's National Gallery in a break-in in February 1994 on the opening day of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and was retreived several months later. Oslo police confirmed that the robbers were armed and threatened an employee at gunpoint before they took the two canvasses. The Scream has become an iconic symbol of Expressionist angst, showing an individual on a bridge hands clasped around his head and mouth wide open in an apparent cry of despair. |
