We didn't ride it as it happens but the Hogwarts' Express, otherwise known as engine 5972, Olton Hall, has been having a little (working) holiday at the GWSR, who have a very interesting site with the latest news about Hoggie's visit here
We've been over to see it a couple of times: here it is standing in the station ready to go
Those wheels are BIG. About 5' high I'd say.
As you can see, the platform was that special magical one, 9 and errr well I think they mean 3/4
I waited by the footpath on the other side of the track to take this picture as it passed. Everyone in the carriages smiles and madly waves at anyone on the footpath as if you are all the best of friends and they are delighted to see you.

I would make sure that they aren't waving magic wands at you. A muggle can't be too careful around the Hogwarts Express.
