It was being filmed at a village 10 minutes away from us so we went off to take a look and had a very pleasant time indeed. The queue to have your collectables checked in was very long, but we had nothing worth taking so we just wandered around listening in to people's consultations with the experts. You could stand right beside the tables and get a good look and listen.
I heard all about some gold watches, a large 'below stairs' grandfather clock, a painting which turned out to be quite valuable (£3000) - it was rather ugly though.
The most interesting thing was a (different) painting done by 'the Liverpool Lowry' for its owner when he was a boy of ten. The painting showed a wall with personalised graffiti on it. They were filming this item with the expert and owner chatting about it.
Mr Merry has done a nice webpage with pictures of our day at Stanway so have a look here - Antiques Roadshow at Stanway HouseHere's the picture whose story was filmed:And here's part of a collection of Barbara Cartland hats that was also filmed for possible inclusion in the broadcast programme.
Talking of pink, interestingly many of the male experts evaluating the collectables wore pink socks. I don't know if this is some kind of uniform or just very trendy in London at the moment What a fun day trip!
I wonder about the people who drag their possessions to that, though. If you turned out to have something valuable, suddenly you'd be worrying about insurance, and who get's it in your will, and all that truck. Maybe better not to know, eh?
[plus, suppose you broke your antique whatchamacallit in transit?]Creature went with Merry and Mr Merry and Desert Princess to Stanway House on a very fine day, and they turned on the fountain - an amazing sight.
A lot of the fountain water lands on the grass. Childen scream in delight as they get soaked.
I has nicked the piccy from the Stanway House website.

Put it back! Will you be on any of the TV footage. No fountain it was promised, but must have been saved for the afternoon, perhaps to alleviate disappointment if your valuable turned out to be not quite so as one had hoped.

No camera came near unless they were secretly filming people walking around. Everyone had dressed up in case. Well, not Mr Merry. This is being shown tonight on BBC 1 at 7pm. I don't think there will be any glimpses of Merry and Mr Merry but I was wearing a particularly bright pink jacket... so you never know We didn't appear but our next-door neighbour (nearly) was in the very last scene.
The Pink Hats didn't make the final cut
It is a very good show, I had forgotten how interesting it is.Next Page...
