Chrissie, I'm pretty sure I know why they won't play for you.
Run Windows Media Player
On the Tools menu select Options
Select the Filetypes tab
Tick Midi Files and then do OK etc to close it and come back here.
If that doesn't sort it let me know and I'll tell you what else to try, but that's the most likely case. You may need to give it permission to do it on some security thing.
