About all that's left that's safe to eat is porridge. :(
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4088824.stm

Only certain types of porridge, Eccs - the unprocessed whole oats so don't think you're getting off scot free if you stick to Quaker or Ready-Brek!   ;)

The red meat thing only applies (apparently) if you eat larger quantities than most of us do (say a hamburger at lunch and a fillet steak every night).  I love meat and I ain't giving up my pork chops for anyone!

British Meat, which claimed there was no reason for most people to change their habits. "If you eat meat, you are not going to get cancer," said a spokesman.

So.. it has some kind of protective effect then?   :lol I don't think that's quite what he meant....

I wonder have they checked all the seemingly unrelated factors.

e.g. if a person can afford to eat red meat twice a day , then they aren't short of a few bob and there their rich lifestyle may cause the cancer rather than the food they eat.

Good point. Maybe having money causes cancer and we can save their lives by taking most of it away from them.

This may be a case of correlation not implying causation

I found some good examples of that. :D

Fact:  Ice cream sales and the number of shark attacks on swimmers are correlated. The sharks don't attack ice cream eaters, but both swimming and eating ice cream do tend to happen in the summer.

Fact: The number of cavities in elementary school children and vocabulary size have a strong positive correlation. Saying long words doesn't wear your teeth out. The number of cavities and children's vocabulary are both related to a child's age.

I heard of another, that there is a correlation between the length of the lifeline on the palm of a person's hand and how long they will live. This appeared to be borne out when dead peoples' hands were examined; those with short lifelines had died young whilst those with long lifelines lived to a ripe old age. Surprising? Not really. The lifeline simply grows longer as you age.
Red meat causing more heart attacks and cancer is in the news again, it was just on the TV .

So a reminder after 4 years.

I nearly bought some fillet steak in morrisons today but I decided against it, so I will live longer now.

Awwww Furby I wish you had had it.

Morrisons does fantastic fillet steak, better than Tesco who tend to hide a gristly bit underneath  :mad

Mind you my favourite meat is belly of pork, slow roasted till the fat mels to gold and the crackling is crisp - our local butcher has Glos Old Spot and it's delicious.  I'm a cheap date :D

As merry wished for me, I am reporting in that I did get some fillet steak the next week for a treat and have not yet died of a heart attack or BSE.
I'm very glad you did  :D  Did you grill it?  I fry Mr Merry's because our Evil Smug has a very evil grill even by the smug's incredibly evil standards.  He insists on them being well-done even though everyone knows they are better. moister, and tenderer, when still a little pink!

Apparently steakhouses keep back the really rough old bits to serve to customers who insist on Well Done because you can't tell.

You CAN tell, but if they have the rubbish then they have to have some excuse to fob it off. I usually ask for 'medium' as I'm mindful of this distinction and don't mind a bit of pink in the middle.
