Women have been warned that they have a significant increased risk of getting cancer if they drink just one glass of wine a day. But we have often been told that the same amount can lower the risk of heart disease. So, you're screwed whether you drink or whether you don't. But at least you can choose the disease you prefer to die of. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7906355.stmMy conclusion is: we've all got to die of something. All the hay in Texas, ya'll. Bottoms up!That's the err spirit! If you have to choose the disease to die of Cancer would be the least favourite choice would it not?
I wonder if you are any safer just drinking at weekends rather than every day.First and foremost, note that the researchers had to combine the low level of consumption-group with the "moderate" drinkers in order to get a statistically significant difference. [To my way of thinking, this was not legit, and shame on the journal for publishing this. Lousy peer review, that.]
Three drinks a day is NOT what doctors define as healthy intake.
Furbs, I think the other problem with this research is: there isn't really a good demonstration of cause and effect. At least I haven't read any convincing evidence at the molecular level, that alcohol is promoting the establishment or progression of breast cancer. If wine has a positive effect on the circulation such that heart attacks are delayed or prevented, then statistically, wine drinkers are more likely to die of cancer because they are less likely to die of heart disease.
Cutting out wine consumption might increase your probability of dying of heart disease, without decreasing your probability of getting cancer, see?
What would have been far more convincing would be to compare teetotaler women who drink grape juice to women who drink one glass of wine a day, and see how their rates of breast cancer compare.
Three drinks a day is NOT what doctors define as healthy intake.
You mean we have to drink more than that?Oh eccles! Where's An Elbow to the Ribs Smilie when I need it most?
