10. How many stories make up the `Canterbury Tales`?

I had a vague notion that it might be either 12 or 24 (bit of a 100% margin for error there  ;) ), and that Chaucer might be supposed to have intended to write a greater number but that the Tales were incomplete - so I checked and I was fairly quite a lot Rong; there are 24 plus the General Prologue, but in the Prologue he says there are 29 people in the group plus himself - through he doesn't describe them all in detail - and the plan is that they will each tell four stories (2 on the way out and 2 more on the way back). So you might say the Tales themselves pretend there will be up to 120 stories, but I don't know what Scholars reckon he actually intended in reality. (well there are 100 in the Decameron, so ...)

Anyway, 24 people actually tell a story (and I don't remember if any of them tell more than one, but I don't think so, although they do sometimes interrupt each other). :)

3. On what occasions would the royal standard be flown at half mast?

Expected answer:
No occasion. [since there is always some British monarch to take over when the previous King or Queen kicks the bucket, the Royal Standard always flies at full mast.]

Correct answer:
The Royal Standard flies at half mast as it is being raised, and as it is being lowered.  ;)

well spotted Asy and well done Helio - I had to read one of those tales, the Pardoner's, for A-level - it wasn't my favourite A-level text I must say but quite lively I suppose and nicely sarky about religion :) well done Midge too

:clap
