Recently my four year old DVD player started playing up, deciding to continually open and close the DVD tray when prompted by the remote to just open it to insert a DVD. After a few minutes of playing "tray goes in.. tray goes out" it would let me play a DVD.
It was getting tiresome so I looked around for an alternative. The LG BD390 looked promising: it is network capable either through an internal wireless connection or through a 100Mb ethernet cable. It will play streamed content from the PC or from a USB attached device, or you can stick the content on a DVD disk and play it from there. It will play Xvid, DivX, MKV, AVI, DVD-R, DVD+R, commercial DVD and BluRay.
So I hunted around for the best online price, then called Richer Sounds Bristol. They had one in stock and they would match the price, saving £30.
I got it home and it would network, play USB content, play stuff from YouTube, but the main thing about it, BluRay, well... there was a slight problem. The damned disk tray again! This time it didn't even play "tray goes in.. tray goes out" but sat there and sulked when I pressed the "open" button.
Back to Richer Sounds it went, and they didn't have a replacement. A bummer, but this is where this particular retailer began to differ from your average Comet/Curry's etc. They offered a refund, or as an alternative, the earlier BD370 model as a loan until new stocks of the BD390 were obtained. It isn't quite as versatile as the later model but is still quite good so I said "ok". They also slipped me a tenner from the till for petrol because I had had to travel across most of Bristol to return the player.
I finally gave back the loan player and picked up the new one last Sunday, also taking advantage of the store's additional five year warranty. Normally I don't bother with these overinflated wastes of money but this deal was only 10% of the purchase price, and if the device doesn't go wrong in the next five years I can claim the warranty cost back.
I can understand why the place is alway heaving with customers!
The new player? A cracking bit of kit, Gromit!
It sounds like quite a player. The network link would be really useful to me and so would being able to play from USB.
I've bookmarked the shop's website for next time I need something. Not least because their customer service seems to be in a different league.
That was amazing customer service - it seems light years since customers could hope to be offered a loan of a functioning piece of EQ when a purchase malfunctioned - these days you are more likely to get a shrug and a 'not our problem madam that you just paid silly money for something that doesn't work'...
Here at Merry Towers we operate on a time-cut several years behind the latest technology so I can expect to get one of these about the time of the Olympics (the 2016 ones) but it sounds like something to look forward to!
I've now added a 1.5TB Samsung Story Station external hard drive to this device. This will enable me to play downloaded material without the PC being on. The drive is very quiet, it runs cool, and can be turned off from the front when not in use. It's got a gain control for the little activity light which is neat as you can turn it right down when watching video so it isn't a distraction.
