On the tonight show , we have the news that Food prices are going up. We have all noticed this I expect.

Well it isn't going to go away and we will have to relearn tips from wartime rationing and post war when we used up leftovers.

I haven't forgotten them yet (although I am too young for the war, both my mother and grandmother wittered on incessantly about such things) so I am OK.

On the Prince Philip show he has explained that Food prices are going up as there are too many people in the world. He is not as daft as he looks.

I think Prince P just hit lucky, it was about due  :rolleyes

I think I'm pretty good about being thrifty and can happily live on fried-up leftovers, but you have to have something in the first place to get the leftovers of course.  And those I cook for are not nearly so cheap to feed :(

No? He obviously hasn't counted the number of his own descendants lately, currently 12.

Well the latest news is that Fat People are to blame for rising food prices and global warming.

Well let's get rid of Prince Philip and eat the fat people, howzat!

I have noticed a huge increase in my Tesco bill lately.  Even with both girls away and with no alcohol I reckon it's gone up £10-£15.  I'm reasonably thrifty and make everything I can from scratch (not that that's always cheaper.)

:(

Too right that it is not always cheaper. I bought some cooking apples and I could not believe how much they were, much dearer than real apples. So I bought a one pound apple crumble from Iceland the next week.

I have started to put bread and milk in the freezer and only going shopping every fortnight now.

How can we blame fat people? everyone knows that this wonderful country is being ruined by smokers

And single mums

And gay people of course

And old people.

Teenagers! they are the worst!

And left handed people!

Oh and thin people who need the heating on more because they are not insulated. They are the worst too

I have to wonder what the rich think is going to happen if food gets priced out of our range. Do they think we will all sit and starve uncomplaining? They should be terrified and working to bring costs down because of course we will take theirs.

because of course we will take theirs.

Very perceptive, Pani. I wonder if that is lost on Tony Blair who has recently converted to a belief system that promotes unsustainable population growth.

Well food prices are still going up even if food is not VATable.

I looked at my recent till receipt to assess the damage I will face due to the VAT increase (up from 17.5% to 20% from 1st Jan ) and I thought it wouldn't be much as mostly I buy food.

Items including chocolate are an expense for me as they are VATable. Chocolate isn't food.  Fruit juice is VATable which I hadn't realised and was surprised. Fruit juice prices have already gone very high without more on top.

I am finding the "keeping out of the shops as much as possible" the best plan to keep costs down because you always buy stuff don't you. Go in for bread and milk and buy some bargains because you see them but if you stayed at home you wouldn't know about the bargains.

My mother taught me to be thrifty when it mattered (and to spend spend spend when you could) and I'm going to not-go-to-the-shops until July, when I start Xmas shopping again  :devil

My milkman left a bill for £51 this morning which I was a bit surprised by.  I did order some extra stuff over Xmas 'to give him some trade' as doorstep deliveries are under threat here as everywhere.   Maybe he has added triple Vat as milk comes in vats or something  :huh
