I keep seeing these bargain food sites mentioned on various forums and people seem very keen on them so today I took the plunge and made an order from Food Bargains

I got quite a lot of stuff for £22 (inc 5.99 delivery) and there were some good things on there so I will report back when it arrives.

Note that if you live in some places (Leeds is one) you can have free delivery which makes it very attractive indeed.

No Vesta packet meals though :(

This was my order (mostly for Jay, hence lots of junk  :rolleyes ).  Am most looking forward to the Blue Artesian Water as it comes in lovely blue Venetian Glass bottles :D

Approved Foods is another popular site but I haven't tried this one yet
I have now had several orders from Approved Foods and I highly recommend them.

They give you a delivery slot within one hour (emailed to you the day before), pack the stuff beautifully in new cardboard boxes with lots of bubblewrap, and you can get genuine bargains here, the prices are very low and delivery costs very reasonable.

Particularly good:

branded Coke and Pepsi (and other soft drinks) - eg 5 (retro glass) bottles of Coke Zero for £1
tins of 'nice' biscuits
crisps, chocolate, sweets, nuts
packet food

Their stock varies according to what they have in.  I make occasional visits to the site, pick out a few things, then make a final order when I'm ready.  It then merges previous and current baskets if you choose (this means anything that went out of stock in the meantime will be removed, but this way you can do say one monthly order to keep delivery cost down.)

They also do fruit and veg  - I forgot to test that out - but 29p for a red or green pepper is a good price compared with my first, best love, Mr Tesco  :)

PS one does of course make the occasional 'mistake'.  I bought a load of 'Marmite Cashew Nuts' for a song, thinking that I love both marmite and cashews... but it turned out to be a marriage made in Hell, not Heaven (I still ate them though).

19p for a christmas pudding is a good bargain.

I wish I could be bothered.

I bought two 19p Christmas puddings :D

This is my Xmas pudding timeline:

Phase 1:  2 puddings, one for pre-Christmas dinner at DF, one for Xmas day:  had a Stir-Up Sunday every year in October at which the tiny merry-babies would help, very solemnly hefted onto the worktops to give the pudding mix a Stir with a wooden spoon and make a Wish, silver threepenny bit dropped in to choke surprise one lucky pudding-eater.  Boiling Puddings steamed up the kitchen for about 10 hours in total.

Phase 2:  The Puddingless years when we didn't even notice it was Christmas.

Phase 3:  Normality resumed but to hell with it, can't be bothered with all that stirring and boiling for hours for just one pudding-eater (moi) so will buy a Harrods Special gold-leaf pudding.

Phase 4:  As 3, but Marks and Spencers

Phase 5  ditto, but Tesco

Phase 6:  buy unwanted pudding in the January Tesco sale for 25p, keep till following Christmas

Phase 7 (current) :  buy 'de branded' Christmas pud of unknown provenance for 19p at Approved Foods.

Phase 8......  :huh

I ate our old pudding last year, the one we had ready from phase 6 but hadn't eaten in 2009.  I think it was a few months out of date by Christmas but I survived.

I remember phase 1 from many years ago but my Mummy only ever tried it the once and we had to use a sixpence. She said what was the point and bought one after that. Little Furbies can stir the cake she said. I think we pushed the sixpence in the bought one from outside and still steamed it for a few hours but not ten.

I just got one from Morrisons this year, a little mini one for me that I can do in the microwave.

They are one of those things that do wonderfully in the microwave.  One of the few things :)  Alll Steamed Puddings cook to soft steamy perfection in seconds and none of that ridiculous boiling business.
I remember the Lidl's luxury pudding wowed all the reviewers in previous years. Is the Merry household getting one or more from them this year?
Oooh I had forgotten about the wonderful Lidl pudding.  Must have a look when we do our monthly trip.  Even though I already have the 19p ones...
Steamed Puddings were ahead of their time and just waiting for the microwave to be invented weren't they.

Unlike Baked Potatoes that are not nice at all cooked outside real ovens.

As they are only 19p keep them for next year or as emergency if you have to feed large numbers of people unexpectedly. I can confirm puddings are safe to eat many years later.

I forget exactly which year but it would have been in the last 20 years , My family ate a Robinsons pudding which was priced 2s/6d so dated back to the early 1970s. They are all dead now apart from me though.
