Rosehip Syrup!
I remember being given a spoonful of this delightful, sweet, ruby-red stuff as a 'tonic' - though since sweets were rationed in my house to once a week, I simply enjoyed it as a delicious extra treat and didn't care two hoots, or even one hoot, about its healthy properties.
I remember one year when I was very small (in the 60s) all us kids from Birdlip village being sent into the hedgerows with bags to collect rosehips as a sort of national rosehip effort, I don't remember any more details than that except that us common urchins were allowed (tremble!) onto the local estate by permission of the Lady of the Manor to collect her very noble rosehips.
I see from a quick Google that you can actually still buy the stuff from health food stores, but it certainly hasn't been a feature of my girls' childhood the way it was of mine......and with school semolina? Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.......
Rosehips may be largely forgotten but blackberry picking is still very popular around here. When I was little we had Rosehip syrup.
But we were townies and got the processed kind in a bottle called DelRosa from the baby clinic.
We could also get Orange and I still have one of the bottlesbut I forgot the oranges name.
It must have been healthier than healthy as they sold it at the baby clinic.Would it have been Haliborange? A mix of orange and halibut liver oil? I just vaguely remember this from early childhood, late 1940s -- it wasn't something we used. I think we used to get an orange juice concentrate from the Food Office.
Extract of malt, now, that was a treat -- and the cat loved it too when allowed to lick the spoon. (I wonder if that's what inspired A.A. Milne?)I really can't remember the name.
Halierorange does ring a bell but that may be as they advertise vitamins on the TV not because I remember it but who can tell.
This is the bottleThat looks like what my Uncle Mick used to call 'Welfare Orange'. I walked with him to the baby clinic in the late 60s to collect some for my baby cousin. I was surprised though when he took it home and emptied it into demijohns. Apparently the whole family had 'Welfare Orange Wine' as their nightly tipple. We had forgotten this topic there must be loads of things we remember.
Whatever happened to Free Speech?
I can't elaborate on this topic for obvious reasons.

Cheap Food.
Food that was once cheap is not so cheap.
There is a saying "cheap as chips" but chips are now a dear do.
And Beans on Toast is a stereotype of acheap meal but if to you Beanz Meanz Heinz they are now quite dear and to get cheap beans you have to get "basic" beans and they taste horrible.Next Page...
